Show Mormons in Arizona Mr A F McDonald president of the Mormon settlements of central and southern Arizona and II IV Brizee David P Kimball and C J Robinson of Mesaville a Mormon settlement on Salt river reached Tucson Thursday night on their way to St David settlement on the San Pedro river eighty miles from Bedson whither they proceeded yesterday yes-terday morning with the exception of Mr Brizee with the intention of inspecting the colony and holding religious services on Sunday next Mr Brizee called at the Journal office yesterday morning and we hat the pleasure of seeing a pioneer besides be-sides whom all others are mere tenderfeet ten-derfeet He came to Arizona thirty five years ago with the Mormon Legion The march of the 600 was attended with unparalleled hard shp3and en they reached Tucson they were nearly famished for food and water The native population manifested decided signs of hos ility and Mexican soldiery offered battle but there was death in retreat re-treat and the Mormons made a bold dash and entered the village which vas little more than collection of mud huts with no retentions to grandeur and no promise of future greatness The troops fled in terror before the onslaught of these starving starv-ing pioneers and they were enabled to quench their thirst and appease their appetites Mesaviile is a flourishing settlement settle-ment of 800 souls The lands owned by the Mormons are irrigated by canals from Salt River and fruits and crops grow luxuriantly Lat erly they hare turned their atten ion to the cultivation of grapes and haTe been very successful Jones vile within afew miles of Mesa YUle lias about seventylive families fami-lies who are fully as enterprising and energetic as their neighbors The Mormons when they return from the San Pedro will probably enlighten the citizens of Tucson in regard to the general features of their faith and will endeavor to rush away some of the cobwebs which have obscured the visions of Christians and blinded them to the really meritorious characteristics of i the Mormon beliefTucson A T Journal May 14th II |
