Show + DEPRAVITY THRICE DEF DE-F t PItA VED The worthless Tribune charges t the HERALD wilii finding fault anent the recent Fourth of July celebration cele-bration In this it shows itself if RJ possible even more utterly destitute t t 1 of truthfulness and principle than w f ever before The HEKALD has not i 1i found fault nor hunted for fault I but has endeavored all along to re r pei what it considered malicious r f insinuations and downright falsehoods false-hoods emanating from its downtown down-town neighbor Criticism is not fault finding by any means when is it is based upon even apparently I t t good reasons it is rather pointing k r out defects in order that those who k lr are responsible for them may seethe yt s see-the error of their ways and thereafter i there-after avoid them To call names s and resort to vilification is always s the Tribunes reserve force upon which it relies when beaten baffled and dr ven to the wall It grimaces like a monkey and says what its brainpower doubtless considers severe things about its opponents t j F in order to set on a certain quantity fi d of idiotic patrons to applauding this of 4 being its only Lope when it can no f lousier act the Dart of manliness r 0 i A and rebut the overwhelming proof a i 1 arrayed against its statements 1 and Anybody of mature years sound mind knows that there is such a place as Liverpool hence there is no controversy and j nothing to prove as to that but because the assertion that there is such a place comes t p Irom a source that would rather die I than eat a square meal does it t therefore follow that all the allegations allega-tions emanating from that source are true and do not require proof The Tribune is notoriously the har lot oi the press it lies from the Very lust of lying it hates truth as the commoa enemy of mankind f avoids the light of day and because it accidentally tells the truth once does it therefore follow that decent people should not require proof as to its other utterances Those maters mat-ers which are generally and all the time recognized as facts do not need 1 its support they speak for themselves them-selves but its own allegations are its own offspring and the better part of humanity hereabout want should be com 1 t to know why they pelled to answer the concoctions of 1 + A I professional scandalmonger We will here take occasion to l state that the first public demon 1 l jtration which occurred in Utah after its settlement by the pioneers was the celebration of the Fourth pf July and there was no flag present pre-sent but the stars and stripes This was before the Tribune had an existence ex-istence or the men who now conduct con-duct it had matured the arts of vilification t fication t and detraction There was I as much enthusiasm and Americanism 1 Ameri-canism displayed then as there has ever been since and it J 1 Was as earnest and sincere 53 any feeling which the soul ever i gave birth to Of course the celebrators cele-brators on that occasion labored under I un-der some disadvantages they did I i not have a newspaper whose columns I i col-umns contained such statements as 1 that bawdyhouses gambling dens f I and drinking saloons were things to be commended because leading Young Utah out of Mormonism 4 as the Tribunes columns have contained 4 con-tained they did not have officials f whose whole career here and elsewhere else-where was a blistering blasting infamy I in-famy they did not have laws and rules which meant one thing for i one party and another thing for another an-other party they did not have carpetbaggers I car-petbaggers and nondescripts to remind I I i mind them that they were altogether alto-gether bad and hopelessly incurable because not agreeing on all points With their visitorsbut they celebrated i j I cele-brated the Fourth all the i tit 1 same and did it with as f i much spirit and boisterous display as though there had never > been and never would be an opponent oppon-ent within a thousand mites It the Tribune and its corporals I w it 1 1 guard of questionable followers want a separate celebration by all means let them have it there is no law against such a thing and no one will even attempt the interposition of an obstacle But they have no right to resort to the defamation of a whole community because the latter refuse to give way to a hand full of bigots and act in such away a-way as they may direct As to the personal allusions in tLo article referred to they are neither here nor there THE HERALD HER-ALD is responsible for its own utterances utter-ances no matter from what source it may derive them and to attempt to beslime private individuals in such a case shows not only lack of decency but lack of sense How over it is but little matter i Lei the galled jado wince Our withers are uowrung |
