Show Comets FAIUUNGTCN June 281881 Editors Herald As soon as the mail arrived this morning my first thought was to look at the DAILY to see what you had got to tell us about that beautiful beauti-ful meteor myself and a few others saw about the hour of 10 oclock last evening Of coursj it is well understood under-stood that editors can tell us all about whatever happens and answer an-swer all our foolish questions but perhaps this circumstance may bean be-an exception to the general rule and for fear it should be so I concluded I would write and tell you of it It was a beautiful sight It appeared to be about the size of a small football of course you know how big that is giving out as it traveled all the colors of the rainbow in great brilliancy bril-liancy Its course was from north to south It was in sight about a quarter of a minute By the way Mr Editor wont you explain why the comet we delight in looking at every evening appears to travel from west to east Is it coming after us in corkscrew fashion L L About the meteor which was visible for a minute and traveled from north to south even the editor of the DAILY can tell our correspondent corres-pondent nothing excepting that he was strikingly fortunate in seeing it The camet seen every evening does not travel either east or west up or down but is pursuing a straight course either north or south It is as we have twice before be-fore stated in the constellation Auriga and the motion of the earth is what leads to tue belief that the comet rises and sets The indications indica-tions are that the comet is traveling south the reasons for this belief being found in the fact that it becomes be-comes clearer each night and rises higher in the heavens If it were going northward it would become less distinct nightly V V r |
