Show I AHA W SABINA r A Strange Case of Attempted Suicide Sui-cide A few days ago a dispatch was published pub-lished in the HERALD calling Dr Benedict to Terrace at once to attend Ara W Sabin who had been shot through the left breast No particulars particu-lars whatever were given and the doctor left on the afternoon train for Terrace Laterin the day it was ascertained as-certained that he had l been compelled to go to Grouse Creek Box Elder County this territory On Tuesday morning the wounded person who ilS quite a young man arrived in this city and was taken to St Marya hospital The case is a very strange one as no cauee is assigned for tbe ehooting and all the particulars that can be learned are aa follows Tile occurrence took place a week ago last Sunday night Sabin is said to be a young man rather inclined tube tu-be morose jealous and melancholy and some time since married a oung girl who it is understood whether true or not is given considerably tj levity Whether Sabin was jealous or not of his wife or whether ho had cause or not cannot be learned but on Saturday and perhaps the night preceding he had been drinking some thniinh not a ririnkitip man as I Use t term generally comprehended His wife her mother her brotoer and Sabin himself were sleeping in the house the mother and daughter in the same bed About midnight tbe mother awoke and raw Sabin standing over the bed looking steadily at them with a peculiar gaze She Baked him what was the matter but he made her no answer she inquired then if be was sick to which he gave no response but continued con-tinued gazing steadfastly at them The mother then awakened her daughter and told her to speak to him and abe said 10 Whats the matter Arc Are you sick Still no reply was given He then turned to a bureau and after looking through it for a few moments returned to the bedside witb a bottle of laudtoum in bis hand His wife took it from him whereupon he again turned to tbe bureau and after rumaging through it pulled out a large sixabootei pistol and walked to the window in tbe wall nearest the bedstead and bureau and between them and stood gazing out into the night He had not spoken a word By this time they all arose and commenced to dress and while doing so a shot was fired TUG mother then stepped up to him taking bold of and shaking him nnd at the eame time saying Tnat is enougb of this nonsense II When she shook him he ell His wiles brother picked him up and it was then ascertained that he bad shot himself He still held the pistol in his hand and did so when placed in a chair The brother immediately ran to the barn got ou a horse and went to tbe nearest neighbors When the neighbor came to tbe house he found Sabin in the chair the pistol still in his hand with the point against his breast just in tbe act of again shooting himself The neighbor took it from him and this so far as known is the first attempt that was made to taka tbe weapon from him he having held it in his hand all the time When the doctor got there he found tbat the ball bad entered the left breast just about half an inch to tbe right ot the nipple and on a line with it It bad ranged downward as it naturally would and to the left being held in tbe right band had just missed the heart and came out at the back immediately below the last rib If must have cut through tbe lelt lung as ho has pit blocd Dr Benedict says the wound is not dangertu and not nearly so painful or so bad is it wQuld be if it had been a broken rib He told Sabin < tbat if ho wanted to get well he had better come into the hospital to which Sabin replied tbat he wa not partic ular or did cot care or something to that effect However as stated he came in on Tuesday morning and was sitting up eating shortly after neon When the Sisters asked him about the cause of the shooting he smiled and told them they had better atk the doctor One of bis own brothers cams witb him but his wife nor any of her or his r latives have come witb him other than tee brother The whole cass is a curious one and it is etill further stated that he has no property whatever all of it being claimed by his wife and her people |
