Show TE EQEAPHIO THE PORK QUESTION I Chicago 3Since the publication of Minister Sargents communication to this government concerning the prohibition pro-hibition of American pork into Germany Ger-many the public interest on the subject has been aroused afresh and questions involved are being argued anew in the press of this and other countries Herman Her-man Raster editor of the Illinois Staats Zeitung this morningin reply to a reporters re-porters request for an interview said that had it i not been for the pigheaded stupidity of American pork packers such a prohibition would never have gone into effect The Slants Zeitung a month ago urged them toj have measures adopted f prevent it but became the price of pork was just at the time high enough here not to make the German market of any account to them they would not take any trouble in the matter and allowed measure there to bo completed com-pleted and pu into force and now they find themselves effectually cut out from hat market If you want to know how I feel about prohibition I will tell you that a few week before Congress adjourned journed at the last session I had resolutions resolu-tions introduced which had they been passed would have prevented any such legislation in Germany but there was not time to get them through and Congress adjourned without anything any-thing being done The resolution were to the effect that the President should be empowered in cse any foreign country prohibited the importation of American products before the meeting of the next Congress toretalista by prohibiting pro-hibiting the importation of theproductsj of that country It would not have requIred re-quIred any legislation l by Congress to nave prevented the ernian law from being > passed were tho threa of retaliation would have Bean sufficient to have prevented any such law having been even thought oft of-t would have been sufficient for this government to say You have prohibited the importation of our pork now we are going to retaliate by prohibiting the importation im-portation of all your imports utifa pretext is wanted it is not necessary to institute any investigation Their own courts furnish evidence enough that some of their nine is adulterated and that should be sufficient to warrant a prohibition prohibi-tion of it All that would ba required for the government to say is Some of your hosiery contains poisonous dycuand we mean to protect our people against the danger from them by a total prohibition pro-hibition of their importation The German government very well knows hat any trichinaj they have in Germany Ger-many they get from German swine I look upon their action as an insult to his country The position taken by Sargent has been mine for years past and President Arthur should give him his hearty cooperatic I am sot lawyer enough to know if the President has power to issue a proclamation on his own authority prohibiting the importation tion of anything which might be dangerous dan-gerous to the lives and health of people but I think he has and if he has I am in favor of him using it without waiting for the next meeting of Congress or for Congress to tike any step in the matter |
