Show Those Who Want to be Speaker I The democratic race for the speak ership of the next house is evidently to be free to everybody Hardly a day goes by when there is not afresh a-fresh entry made The most prominent prom-inent of all the candidates is John G Carlisle of Kentucky a man of fine intellect unsullied character and considerable experience in congressional con-gressional life but one of the most able and determined advocates of free trade His principal competitor is Mr Randall whose source of strength lies in the conservative policy towards to-wards the tariff question which be has mapped for the democratic party next year Congressman Joe Blackburn of Kentucky who is a solid advocate of free trade presses his claim with a good deal of persistency not so much perhaps becaese he really expects ex-pects to be elected as to manauver himself into a favorable position for a firstclass chairmanship oi a committee Sunset Cox who has been a regular re-gular standing candidate for speaker during the last fifteen years whether his party was in the majority ma-jority or not will no doubt amuse lumself very much by another venture ven-ture He loves a free trader and worships Tammany hall ExSenat9r William W Eaton who goes into the House next December De-cember and who is a perfect specimen speci-men of the shrewd honest old fashioned democratic politician will probably have a little nucleus of a following among the New England Eng-land democratic representatives He is not disposed to be in a hurry I about lowering the tariff and was the original author of the latin com mission William Dorsheimer of New York one of Tildens most conspicuous conspi-cuous republican converts will be among the mentioned because he is one of the handsomest imposing and magnetic breed of politicians He has showy abilities and would lean toward flee trade Frank Hurd of Ohio with the proverbial instinct of all the statesmen states-men of his state fs keeping himself within convenient reach and will do I his best whether he brcomes speaker or not to pass a low tariff bill next winter William S Holman of Indiana is quietly gathering in western representatives repre-sentatives He does not believe in protection William B Morrison of Illinois in many respects the best and most available of all the rivals will not probably develop a following He I is a believer in free trade but like I many other democrats who believe in the theory he is not going to be foolish In pushing it into practice before its time Keep your eye on Morrison Philadelphia Chronicle Herald |
