of working girls and aud excitable female enthusiasts With no immediate end In view a listless discussion followed the speakers re remarks remarks remarks marks Then the quiet little Utah woman exploded a bomb I 1 have vot voted voted ed fd for 13 years she said At t the last presidential election I cast my vote for William H Taft How she acquired the privilege with without without without political cal game they have effective cam campaign campaign organizations and their Influence ence once is felt in every line of political activity As office holders Utah women are decidedly in the game There are now in the state ten women county record recorders ers one county clerk four tour county superintendents su superintendents superintendents of ot schools two county treasurers two women on the board of the State Agricultural college and two on the board of the School for the Blind In the early years of state statehood statehood hood women were members of ot the leg legislature Republican National convention at Chicago there were two women delegates Mrs Susa Young Gates and Mrs Lucy Clark Two also attended the Democratic Na National National National convention in Denver They were Mrs H J T Hayward and Mrs Irs W WC WC WC C Ventress The most spectacular and effective campaign ever waged wa ed in Utah by a wo woman woman woman man was that made in 1908 by Mrs Margaret Zane Witcher clerk of Salt Lake county She is today one of ot the most prominent figures of local poli politics politics politics tics through h her stampede of the Re Republican RepUblican Republican publican county convention And the beauty of ot it is that she made her own campaign Skilled in the political game through watching operations p while deputy in the county clerks s of office flee fice she announced her candidacy and made a personal campaign that won When Mrs 1 Irs Witcher came out of the building where she stampeded a big convention and upset the organization of two powerful opponents Parley Y Williams a prominent Democrat heart heartily heartIly heartily ily extended his congratulations but added You will never be elected Mrs Irs Witcher because the women wont vote ot for you How about the men said Mrs Witcher J Z am more concerned about them than about the women Results showed sh wed that the women did vote for her and they worked for her because of an effective organization for which Mrs Witcher was responsible Ovation to a Woman Roman With the speech nominating Mrs Yrs Witcher for county clerk began be an an uproar in the convention that in increased party worked quietly and effectively with the result that Mrs Witcher ran ahead of her ticket and had a majority of nearly Since that time as head of the most important county office with a force of
