pIcturesque river trips to be found any anywhere anywhere where lii In the world The last three weeks of November were spent In exploring an and 1 mapping Beef basin Fable valley and part of the country In Fable valley are some excellent cliff and pueblo ruins from which WP we obtained tine fine specimens of pottery In Beef basin are very exten extensive sive alve pueblo ruins of a rather peculiar type They consist of quite large rooms made of strong stone walls and within each group are one or more hIgh towers These towers are sometimes rectangular and sometimes round and a few of them still stand sixteen feet teet in height Here Heretofore Heretofore it has been thought that pueblos with these square and round towers were only built near the Colorado line In south southeastern southeastern eastern Utah but the finding of similar structures in Beef basIn shows that that tribe evIdently spread to the northwest beyond the Elk mountains These hou houses s salso also give evidence of being much more recent than any before examined and we believe will help solve the problem of the time of this ancient occupation Great Natural Bridge Pushing over the north Elk mountains through the snow we found another nat natural ural urai bridge of feet span in Dark can canon canyon yon on and literally dropped from the south Elk O lk off into Hammond canyon and from there visited the wonderful cave ruins of Allen and Cottonwood canyons then passing south to Bluff by way of But Butlers Buttens tens lers wash and the lower Cottonwood December was spent across the San SanJuan SanJuan Juan river In Arizona cleaning out and studying a large cave ruin that we found last summer It contained over a hundred rooms and differs from other cave and pueblo ruins In that It contained no round ceremonial chambers called kives These sacred rooms were rectangular rectangular gular like the other rooms instead of be being belog log ing circular as found in all other ruins heretofore examined A great deal of raw material in the nature of cloth moe moc moccasins baskets wooden Implements stone Implements with handles attached and jewelry made of mosaic turquoIse and jet set on wood was found We Ve ob obtained tamed o valuable specimens for the state museum and the opportunity to study these larg ruins at first hand gives the unIversity much Important data p |
