Show Mfmi ieaiw Poet lEipEnii Otai By DAVE WIGHAM LAYTON No one can ever accuse Layton football Coach Gary Hansen of a weak preseason schedule. Last week the Lancers took on the state runner-up from Idao, this week they take on the defending defend-ing 4A champion from Utah and then the following week they play the runner-up club from the 4A ranks in Utah. BUT THEN when you consider con-sider the tradition and reputation reputa-tion that Coach Hansen and his Laocer teams have built up throughout the years it's easy to see why these big boys want to play them. They say the better bet-ter the competition in preseason presea-son the better the club will be in league action, if that saying is true then watch out for the Lancers come league play. Layton started off the year last week with a defeat to the Capital team out of Idaho. One must remember though that the Idaho club was a veteran team with many returning from the runner-up club of a year ago and they are one of the top favorites to win the title this season. THEN TOO remember this Layton club doesn't have too many experienced players back from last year so they are a little green behind the ears as far as varsity playing time goes. Give Coach Hansen and his staff time though and this club will be right in the running for post season play. THESE LANCERS have pride in their football tradition not to mention a lot of talent. Take people like Steve Kit-trell, Kit-trell, Lance Brightshue, Brian Murray, Rich Ipaktchian and James Suitt and you have the makings of a good football team. Offensively the Lancers look to senior quarterback Todd Vought to lead them with running backs Brian Murray and Keith Wilson delivering the mail. When the ball goes in the air tightend Mike Adams, wingback Kurt Mockli and receiver re-ceiver Stuart Rosenlund are on the receiving end. UP FRONT the Layton team can matchup with anyone, Jaime Oliveras and Jeff Davies hold down the guard spots with Brightshue and Suitt at the tackles. Rich Ipaktchian anchors the line at the center position. These five have the size and quickness, strength is a big asset, to battle any front five in the state. All they need right now is playing time together and some varsity experience. ex-perience. Layton has always been known for hardnose defense and this year's group could turn into one of the best they've had around. Oliveras, Chuck Parrish, Ipaktchian, Brightshue, and Steve Rench hold down the fort on the front line. BRIAN MURRAY, Steve Kittrell and Mike Adams add their names to the long list of excellent linebackers that the school has produced over the years. In the secondary the Lancers Lan-cers look to Mike Bunting, Alan Gentry, John Lynch and Kurt Mockli to pick off some opponents passes. - IF YOU recall a year ago the Lancers were beaten badly by Skyline in a preseason game and we all know what type of season the Layton club went 6h to have after that. Capital had 18 players returning from last year, that gives them a ddefinite edge on opening game. This week Layton battles Skyline on the Eagles' home field at 4 p.m. Skyline is under a new head coach and a new system. Last week they lost to -Brighton, next week's oppo- nent for Layton, 7-3. Both these teams don't like to lose football games and will be going full out for the win this week. |
