perhaps best expressed Tuesday morning by the cheer that went up from the crowd outside the prison as the hearse bearing his body drove by Charlie Dinkins a lifelong In that mob was Starke resident and former fire chief He raised a wine class and toasted a friend as the vehicle passed “Bundy’s the most despicable son of a bitch in the world” Dinkins said “It’s time for him to go” There were at least 500 people gathered outside the Florida State Prison who felt the same way And another 200 reporters photographers and other media types were there to help them tell it to the world n hours before the exeThe atmosphere in the cution was jubilant if not a little macabre There were beer kegs in the parking lot and a mannequin in a homemade electric chair in the back of a pickup from cruising up and down the road less thkn a half-mil- e the prison wing where Bundy waited to die There were contingencies from various colleges including Florida State University where Bundy killed two Chi Omega sorority sisters in 1978 Most of the students drinking beer and mugging for the cameras were 4 or 5 years old when Lisa Levy and Margaret Bowman were clubbed to death They carried a banner that said “Florida State Wants Revenge” Others paraded for television crews with signs exclaiming “Fry Bundy” and “This ‘Buzz’ Is for You Ted!” Nearby a man who claimed to be a Florida police officer sold electric-chai- r tie tacks for $5 Business was brisk Local radio stations got into the spirit of the celebration with disc jockeys playing a recording of sizzling bacon dedicated to the condemned man and accepting suggestions for parting songs like “Smokin’ In The Beys Room” and the appropriately named heavy metal band ACDC’s “Flip The Switch” The disc jockeys also crooned a few verses of a local favorite “On Top of Old Sparkey” — the nickname for Florida’s notorious electric chair As 7 a m approached they jokingly urge Starke residents to shut off unnecessary electrical equipment to make sure the electric chair would function properly While all this demonstrated a developed sense of gallows humor most of it was done in fun But sometimes it got ugly Near the scheduled time Bundy was to be executed a small badly outnumbered group of penalty protesters — perhaps 30 in all — gathered into a candlelight prayer circle in a field across the road from the prison As they kneeled some of the nearby revelers took notice and began to heckle them These are 20 of over 30 known or suspect- ed victims of Ted Bundy’s reign of terror i Denise Naslund across Utah and the nation Bundy took missing and murdered women ended Tuesday at 7:07 a m in Florida’s electric chair Bundy 42 his head shaved and peering nervously around the death chamber was strapped into the oaken chair carved by prison inmates 64 years ago and subcurrent for one minute ending his jected to a 2000-vol- t career as one of this country's most prolific and notorious serial killers He was pronounced dead at 7:16 a m EDT Bundy who spent his last weekend confessing to lawmen from four Western states about a string of sex mur ders long credited to him was executed for the savage mutilation murder of Kimberly Leach who was kidnapped from her junior high school in Lake City on Feb 9 1978 Bundy also was under the sentence of death for the murders of two sorority sisters in the Chi Omega house on the Florida State University campus on Jan 15 1978 Witnesses to the execution said Bundy was resigned and obviously frightened as he was led into the chamber just after 7 am and strapped into the chair Earlier according to Florida Corrections spokesman Bob Macmaster Bundy had declined to eat a last meal of steak and eggs hash brown potatoes coffee and juice His head and legs were shaved an hour earlier to prepare for the electrodes on the chair nicknamed “Old Sparky” He was showered and dressed in a light blue shirt and navy pants The warden then read him the death warrant and he was led from the ready cell Some of the witnesses said Bundy was unable to walk on his own and had to be supported as he came through the door He apparently nodded a greeting to Columbia County Attorney Jerry Blair as he was seated in the chair the witnesses said His last words were to his attorney James Coleman and Methodist Minister Fred Lawrence who visited with Bundy during the last hours “Jim Fred I’d like you to give my love to my family and friends” Bundy said At that point according to Tony Panaccio a reporter with the Clearvoater (Fla) Sun the execution attendants placed the metal cap on his head and prepared to cover his face with a heavy black veil “His eyes started to dart around very quickly he was looking at everything and anything like this was the last thing he was ever going to see” Mr Panaccio said Moments later prison superintendant Tom Barton nodded to the masked executioner and the switch was pulled “We heard a clanging noise in the adjacent room and at the same time Bundy sat straight up with a jolt” he said “There was no shaking or anything but his fists clenched” The current continued for one minute crawled” he said “Time just Mr Panaccio said he saw Bundy’s face behind the mask when the prison physican moved the veil to check his pupils “His eyes were wide open” he said “He almost looked astonished” battle to avoid execution ended about Bundy’s midnight Monday when the United States Supreme decision voted to deny granting a Court in a split stay of execution on arguments that the trial judge in the Leach case gave improper instructions to the jury Prison spokesman Macmaster said Bundy was “visibly shaken” when he was told the appeal was denied h A rumored effort to have Bundy found incompetent to be executed never materialized His death ends an 11 year quest which had become almost an obsession with law enforcement officers and politicians in Florida Gov Bob Martinez elected two years ago made the quest for Bundy’s electrocution a major campaign issue Some of the lawmen who dealt with the aftermath of Bundy’s crimes were among the 14 witnesses at the execution as were the prosecutors who pleaded for the death penalty in the Leach homicide There was a stark contrast between Bundy’s ritualized execution and the carnage at the Chi Omega house said Jim Sewell who was a plainclothes officer with the FSU Police Department in 1978 He was the first detective on the scene at that cold January night Now the chief of police in Gulfport Fla Sewell said Bundy had time to prepare for his death — the girls at Chi Omega weren’t given that choice And Bundy’s death he said “was a lot less violent” But oddly Mr Sewell said none of that flashed into his mind when the attendants first led Bundy into the chamber “What came as a real shock was seeing him with his head shaved” he said “That really struck me” The next thought he said was that “Ted no longer controlled us" as he did throughout the Tallahassee trial See A-- Column 1 less than what investigators needed to untangle a number of unsolved homicides and disappearances said Salt Lake County Sheriff Pete Hayward in a Tuesday press conference Bundy had earlier told an attributed to Bundy That leaves at least four and possibly six murders and disappearances of young Utah women unsolved Police are also considering the possibility that Bundy may have killed three other women who disappeared during times he was in Utah which would bring the total to 11 victims Although he appeared as a “defeated man” Bundy continued to manipulate the system until the end hoping to coax officials into another stay of execution explained Detective Dennis Couch who interviewed Bundy Sunday evening in Florida Today’s Chuckle You can’t always keep your emosometimes stripes tions in check or polka dots are nice I Salt Lake County officials said they were fortunate to get any information from the serial killer but believe that more cases could have been solved if they had more time with Bundy before his date with Florida’s electric chair Tuesday morning “In talking to Bundy he admitted to the homicide and kidnapping of the Nancy Wilcox girl and the Debi Kent girl” Sheriff Hayward said Both disappeared during autumn 1974 Bundy only relented to the interview with Detective Couch after his attorney and confidant Diana Weiner convinced him that it may earn him favor with authorities in an attempt to stay his execution Of five Utah cases clearly pointing to Bundy the serial killer admitted to only two refused to comment on two others and flatly denied a murder
