He attended Coalville Elementary and North Summit High School where he was an All State football player. He served an LDS Mission to the Northern States and was a companion with Marion D. Hanks. They remained lifelong friends. He married Beth Bingham on May 25, 1944, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived and raised their family in Coalville. Marvin herded sheep for his father in his youth. After marriage, he worked for almost 32 years at the cement plant in Devil's Slide. He was an active member of the LDS Church serving in many positions in priesthood quorums and church auxiliaries. He loved the scriptures and read them daily. He entertained many with his accordion which he learned to play by ear. He wrote in his journal daily since the fall of 1965.
