Show HEALTH NEWS A8 PAGE SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS 24, 2013 MAY Need for dialysis center in area Michelle Kofford-Thomas had felt sick for months. But she assumed it was something that would eventually pass and she'd be back to her old self again. However, in August 2012 she decided, with the encouragement of her mother, Lorraine Kofford, to see her doctor to have a physical — hoping to learn what the problem was. Protein was discovered in her urine, and subsequent tests confirmed that she was experiencing kidney failure. Michelle's life was about to dramatically change. She soon had to be laid off from her full time job working for Summit County, and also began having problems with her vision. In November she had a fistula formed, and starting in February 2013 she began receiving dialysis treatments three days a week in Salt Lake. Traveling to and from Kamas to her treatment provider requires at least two hours of driving in addition to the 3-4 hours required for her dialysis. It goes without saying that having a dialysis center in Heber would make an enormous difference in Michelle's life. "Every day I was supposed to go to dialysis, we would pray for no snow," Michelle said. "Driving up and down the canyon in a snowstorm can be terrifying." Since her diagnosis, Michelle has already had two surgeries on her eyes. According to her retinologist, she suffers from both diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. The surgeries have been helpful, but she's still not able to see clearly out of both eyes. "We're not looking for sympathy," Lorraine said. "It breaks my heart to see this happening to Michelle. You always hope bad things like this won't happen to your children. I feel helpless. Having a local place for her to receive treatment would make such a difference in her life — in all of our lives." Michelle echoed this in her expressions of hope for the possibility of a dialysis center in Heber. "Knowing I didn't have to drive so far every week — and not having to worry about driving through the canyon in bad weather — it would be wonderful.," she said. "But not just for me. I know there are many others that need this treatment and have to travel long distances three days a week to receive it. I'm just one of many." "When you finish a dialy- sis treatment, you're really wiped out," Michelle added. "I always just want to go home. But I don't want to complain. I know other people have challenges." According to Shawn Morrow, Administrator at Heber Valley Medical Center they've raised nearly $400,000 toward dialysis. The hospital and the Wasatch Community Foundation also have another $250,000 available, contingent on receiving matching funds of $250,000. "With this matching funds opportunity, we are close," mentions Morrow. "Our committee, which consists of community members, hospital employees and governing board members are working diligently to ensure we meet this goal." However there is always a way to help. If you'd like to make a donation or to learn more about their fundraising campaign, visit the Foundation's website at http: / / www.ourwcf.org / donate / bringing-hope /, or call (435) 671-1833. "It's so important to get a dialysis center closer to home," Lorraine added. "Home is very important to those suffering from kidney disease. We're grateful to anyone that can help make this happen." Never leave your child alone, not even for a minute. Babies and young kids can sometimes sleep so peacefully that we forget they are even there. It can also be tempting to leave a baby alone in a car while we quickly run into the store. The problem is that leaving a child alone in a car can lead to serious injury or death from heatstroke. Young children are particularly at risk, as their body's heat up three to five times faster than an adult's. These tragedies are completely preventable and unfortunately we have already had a few this year. Here's how we can all work together to keep kids safe from heatstroke. Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths for children. On average, every 10 days a child dies from heatstroke in a vehicle. Top Tips Reduce the number of deaths from heatstroke by remembering to ACT. A: Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child alone in a car, not even for a minute. And make sure to keep your car locked when you're not in it so kids don't get in the car unsupervised. C: Create reminders by putting something in the back of your car next to your child such as a briefcase, a purse or a cell phone that is needed at your final destination. This is especially important if you're not following your normal routine. T: Take action. If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Emergency personnel want you to call. They are trained to respond to these situations. One call could save a life.
