Posted at five (5) public places on May 20, 2013 Published in the Summit County News on May 24 and 31, 2013 Go CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor The Committee for the 100 Year Celebration of North Summit High School kicked off the first of many events planned for this year. The Graduating Class of 2013 became the first of the "Bravest of the Brave" celebration activities acknowledging 100 years of Brave Spirit and Tradition...19132013. Both this class and the upcoming senior class of next year will be involved in the celebration. The Graduating Class of 2013 came to hike up to the Coalville Ledges, where the Petroglyphs are all that is left of evidence of those who settled once in this valley they called home! They were to write their name on a large rock that fell many years ago off of the ledges above them, as the Native American Indians had done in the past. As they are the graduation class of 2013, they are within the 100 yearrange of this special celebra- tion. "The story goes that Chief Washakie had sent a 24-year old Shoshoni brave to head down the canyon called "Chalk Creek Canyon". He was to scout for their hostile enemy from Chief Black Hawk's tribe, the Utes, and to find a place for his people to come to. Following the creek known then as White Clay Creek, he found the ledges, and while there names the river "Chalk Creek". Here he could see far and wide across the valley." Since that time the Shoshonis and whites became friends, but Natives longed to be with the Shoshoni people once again. After settling the village which came to be called Coalville, they again moved on - and "...like the young man in the Indian story, the young men and women of North Summit High. Students were asked to look out at the beautiful canyons, fields and rivers of this wonderful county. And, like the Indian Brave, they have the responsibility of preserving and protecting this sacred land and the good people who make it their home. (... see Brag page) Classifieds!
