Show AROUND THE COUNTY MAY SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS 17, 2013 Resident pledge to double pledges PAGE A3 Sheriff's Report Blotter AMY ROBERTS SPECIAL TO THE NEWS It's not every day you have an opportunity to double your money, but thanks to the generosity of a Park City resident, doubling your money just got easier — philanthropically at least. Park City resident Bill Blair has agreed to donate $1 million to the Park City Medical Center's foundation, as part of a challenge grant; meaning he will match the money once the first $1 million is raised by the community. Effectively helping the hospital raise $2 million for a much-needed community education center and to further advance the hospital's healthy lifestyle initiatives. "I am hopeful that this challenge grant will motivate others to donate to the Park City Medical Center foundation," said Mr. Blair. "I can't emphasize enough what a valuable resource the hospital is, and how we are all fortunate to have such a high-caliber healthcare facility right in our own backyard." Bill's generosity stems from personal experiences he and his late wife, Jayne, had at Park City Medical Center. "I saw a poster in the lobby about an ICU campaign and I decided to help. I later learned my donation was matched by donors, which planted the idea to do my own challenge grant," he said. The Blairs were frequent visitors and patients at Park City Medical Center in 2012, and were constantly impressed with the level of care and the positive and helpful attitudes of the staff. "I've always believed that you will forget a lot of what people say to you, but you will never forget how they made you feel. The staff at Park City Medical Center made Jayne and me feel like we were the most important people they'd ever helped," Bill said. "That's why I am excited to offer this challenge grant. This is a place where we all can heal, a place we all need in our darkest hours. It's our community hospital, and I hope the community will help support this effort." Mr. Blair has set a goal to have his $1 million donation matched by the end of 2013. To contribute to the challenge grant, please visit the Giving and Volunteering page on www.ParkCityMedicalCenter.org . Sustainability Plan announced LISA YODER Sustainability Coordinator Special to the News Summit County also has developed a county-wide sustainability plan which includes information about the county's carbon footprint, and goals and actions for reducing electricity use and improving sustainability. The plan seeks to balance social, economic and environmental factors to ensure a sustainable future and is available at www.summitcounty.org / sustainability. Summit County Sustainability Coordinator reports that "Summit County has been thrilled to have a local utility to partner with and celebrate the success of these projects. We hope to be an example for the community and encourage that other businesses and residents take advantage of the incentives offered for energy efficiency upgrades." Mike Crystal, Summit County Facilities Director, and Facilities' Staff have done much of the work in house and have been instrumental in the completion of the retrofits and all are very pleased with the outcome. "These projects are not only saving the County money in utility costs, but helped support our local economy. Over 367 hours were spent on these projects alone, therefore creating and retaining jobs. Additionally, all equipment and material was sourced from local companies." In addition to energy efficiency, Summit County is looking at other environmental solutions that include recycling, local food initiatives, and tree planting activities, among others. Sustainability will continue to be at the forefront of Summit County's future objectives, to ensure that the reasons people find themselves coming here to live, visit and recreate are preserved for future generations.
