Bryan R Daybell Ins Agcy Inc Bryan Daybell, Agent 1960 Sidewinder Drive Park City, UT 84060 Bus: 435-649-9161 by Jan My oldest niece, Laurie's, oldest daughter Erin Jo Wynn, graduates from the University of Utah this Friday and I'd like to share a few thoughts with her. The last exam has been taken; the last per finally turned in. The text books, the note books, the digital equivalent of the "blue book," are closed and set away on the shelf. The blackboards have all be dusted, the laptops turned off and the classrooms are locked up. Erin, soon you will be standing at the door of the Huntsman Center, bedecked in a flowing robe, mortar board perched on your head with a stringy tassel dangling by your left eye. You will hear the proud and sweet melody of Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance," and the march will begin. Actually, that's not true. The march actually began years ago when you first started school — when everything was still a mystery; when you still wondered why one plus one equals two; when you still wondered why a group of letters in a specific sequence actually meant "See Tom. Run Tom, run." It continued with learning about Columbus, Darwin and evolution, the Civil War and where babies come from; of Shakespeare, Rasputin and the governmental make up of our country. It continued through the years — when you got your driver's license and had your first fender bender, when you went to the polls and voted in an election. After four seemingly long, but relatively short years, it will be with mixed emotions that you walk down that long row passed family, friends, teachers and professors to claim that diploma which by right is yours. You will look forward, with an apprehensive wishfulness, to the future and for a brief moment, you will wonder if you have learned enough to be a college graduate. Oh, you know that Pi is 3.14 and you can calculate a standard deviation. You have read the classics and can describe the process of osmosis. You can discuss foreign policy and explain political action committees. But you know that what you know isn't all there is to know and there's still so much to learn. You know that college is: classes, the exams, the fighting with professors over some unfair grades and arguing with teachers about certain issues. It's wading through the red tape of registration, the run-around with scholarships and the disappointment of failing a test. But, in your tomorrows, when you drift back to memories of college, it won't be the exams and the homework, the long hours studying and the endless hours on the computer that you remember. You will think of the friendships you made, the fun you had, and the experiences shared and, you will have to admit, the trouble you caused. And you will be glad that you didn't let classes get in the way of your education. You will come to the end of this march and the tassel will move to the other side; but you know there are many more marches to make, many more tassels to move and many, many more life-lessons to learn. It will be with a tear in your eye that you say farewell to the bygone days and it will be with open arms that you meet the challenges of your new world.
