These artists' paintings are then identified by a plaque and hung somewhere visitors can enjoy them inside the Summit County Courthouse in Coalville. For the first time, the awards this year were presented to two teens of Summit County. They were honored for their talents in painting a picture worthy of hanging on the walls in the Summit County Courthouse. Along with other artists from past Summit County Fair Art shows, these two young girls brought their artwork to be viewed with others who were chosen in previous years. "I'll bet these two teens will enjoy their paintings hanging in the Summit County Courthouse even more after they receive and open their check from the Summit County Council!" stated Councilman John Hanrahan with a smile and handshake. The two young ladies pictured are Zoe Spriggs, age 15, and Kassidy Jones, age 12. Zoe was a first-time painter who tried her hand at painting a scene with a river and trees typical of Summit County topography. Her frame was handmade by her family, too, and she did this as an activity with the Young Women in her church. Kassidy took lessons from Janny Richins of Henefer, and this was her first try at a painting — "ever", she said. She and her family are proud of the awesome work Kassidy did on this "masterpiece". Their families were also in attendance at the meeting with the County Council last Wednesday, Aug. 29, to photograph their girls receiving this honor. Firefighters for Muscular Dystrophy Firefighters in South Summit area collected donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association over the Labor Day holiday. They dressed in their uniforms and stood on the corners hoping passing vehicles would stop and donate for a great cause — The Muscular Dystrophy Association.. The annual Fill-the-Boot event, where firefighters collect money in boots, is held across the United States. The South Summit firemen were successful in helping out the International Association of Firefighters for the Muscular Dystrophy Association — and are their biggest donor. The funds it collected will go towards programs including children's summer camps and professional and public health education. Photo by Cheryl Ovard/SCN Editor |
