Researchers will pay gout sufferers in Summit County to participate in local health study Afflicted with gout since his 20s, Coalville mayor says when he has 'a gout flare-up, it's debilitating'. The warmer weather brings people outdoors, increasing both travel and activity levels. But for those who suffer from gout like Coalville Mayor Duane Schmidt, the increase in activity needs to be carefully monitored to prevent attacks. Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis among men. It flares up when the body has an imbalance of uric acid, by either making more than is needed or not excreting enough. A gout attack comes when uric acid molecules start to form sharp, crystal-like formations that lodge into the joints and body tissues. Schmidt said he is hoping to avoid a flare-up by drinking plenty of water. "I try not to let it affect my life," Schmidt said. "But if there's something coming up at the end of the week, I'll drink water all week long so I can be ready for it." Schmidt has suffered from gout since his 20s and with age it has gotten worse. "When I have a gout flareup, it's debilitating," he said. I like .* * * me! * Ent Drug :Free: "I can honestly say in my 30 years of work history, the only time I've ever missed work was because of gout." There is still plenty of research that needs to be done to help people like Schmidt who are suffering from gout. Salt Lake City-based Optimum Clinical Research is currently testing a combination of the medications Allopurinol and Lesinurad to see if it can help prevent gout flareups. "Clinical trials are one way individuals can become more actively involved in their own health care, try new treatments before they are available to a larger population and help others through medical research," said Jared Shields, recruitment coordinator for Optimum Clinical Research. Participating in research can also be financially rewarding. Those who participate in the gout study will receive up to $900 in compensation for their participation, but they must meet specific qualifications. Participants must be 18 or older, have had at least two gout flare-ups in the last year and on a regular dose of Allopurinol for at least eight weeks. Those interested in learning more about the gout study or other medical studies involving diabetes, high blood pressure, COPD or emphysema, heart attacks or asthma may call 801-363-7353 or visit http: / / www.ocresearch.com / participants / ava ilable-studies / . "Participating in a study is a lot like visiting your doctor's office, but with a few distinct differences," Shields said. "You don't pay anything to participate in the study and your insurance will not be billed. We spend lots of time with the patient, making sure they have a clear understanding of the research being conducted and how they can improve their health through lifestyle changes. The studies do not replace regular health care, but can work in parallel with it." Although there is some degree of risk in participating in a drug trial, all studies at Optimum Clinical Research are closely regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and independent review boards. The research is always voluntary and an individual can end their participation at any time, Shields stressed. "We're doing this research because we want to ultimately help improve the quality of life for individuals who are suffering from gout," Shields said. "Gout can be extremely painful and detrimental. Anything that could decrease the effects would have.
