"Preserving the Past, Preparing for the Future" CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor Breakfast on hold, runners and bikers standing and waiting - and visitors and community people gathered around the flag posts as these three young men from BS Troop 141 and Cub Scout Troop 3141 presented the Colors. For Titan Hemingway it was his first time and he did a great job! He had Eli Richins and Keyan Staples to follow, as they posted the Colors and raised the United States Flag. This was the beginning of a long but fun day of celebrating the Birth of our Nation the 4th of July. Bikers and runners had completed their courses, and 30+ more signed up to hit nearly the 200 mark with en- thusiastic participants of all ages. The breakfast was cooked under the Bowery, followed by local entertainment at the Gazebo. Awards for the race were handed out, and each runner or biker was awarded a Henefer 4th of July t-shirt to remember the day. Games and the "big toys" entertained the kids, as adults visited the many booths set up around the baseball field. Entertained at lunch by a hypnotist was a new feature this year. Traditional Bingo and frozen treats followed by the 4th of July Parade down Main Street. A new route confused people for just a moment, as they turned around in the new Henefer church parking lot. The evening brought out the towns-people as they awaited entertainment by Jon Schmidt, popular and great pianist and composer / teacher. The hamburgers, hot dots, and all the trimmings was sold by Henefer Events committee members. It was a great day, and nobody complained about the ban on fireworks. They had seen enough devastation already on the news! It was a great day, and enjoyed by all. Henefer's 4th of July Celebration has become popular and a "must do" for people from near and far! Thanks to everyone for their hard work and preparation in making this day a successful and happy 4th of July! At the end of the evening, Miss Paige Lindsey, daughter of Gabe and Stacey Lindsey was crowned Kamas Valley Fiesta Queen 2012. Her first attendant is Miss Carlee Dick, daughter of Ladd and Cassi Dick. Second attendant is Miss Bailey Howard, daughter of Kurt and Destry Howard. CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor Saturday night the skies were clear, weather perfect, and dust settled after the arena was raked - ready for the Henefer Potato Race! Timers ready! Two teams of 6 line up at each end of the arena, and when the "go" is sounded, they grab their spears - 3 to the center of the arena to use their "spears" to stab the fresh potatoes in the center tire of the arena, then they race to the opposite side to place the potatoes into the tire lying on the ground. all the time being guarded by the three on the other team. The team who carries the most potatoes and actually gets them into the tire on either end of the arena is the winner. There were several heats of men and a full ladies team this year. The heats were intense, and both spectators and participants alike enjoyed the evening! The hide races (that's another story) - this year was a hit as the "jumpers" were as young as five years old - and they made it to the other side of the arena! The night went on with team members and on-lookers enjoying these longstanding Independence Day Traditions in Henefer. The Potato Race game comes from a cavalry exercise, and there are usually one or two team members who get "bumped" off his horse - and potatoes fill the arena before the night it over! Thanks once again to the Henefer Arena Activities Committee for their sponsoring the game - and this year the hide race was also a success. Oh yes - the the kids chased and caught all of the chickens, too! Thanks to the cooks in the concession stands - the food was great! |
