Show SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS PAGE A4 4NRG Conservation Corner Summit County EWP project marks completion; new EWP staffer announced EBLAST, NEWS BRIEFS FROM UTAH'S NRCS The Summit County Council and NRCS conducted a tour last week and announced the completion of a $3.3 million Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) project in Summit County. Over the past year several sites damaged from the spring floods of 2010 and 2011 have been restored to protect life and property from future flooding. A $2.5 million federal EWP grant along with $800,000 in local funding and in-kind work from Summit County made it possible to protect 25 sites from future flooding as well as debris removal and revegetation throughout the Weber River and Chalk Creek corridors. It's estimated the project will provide $5 million in public benefits by reducing damages from future flooding occurrences. NRCS State Conservationist Dave Brown and Summit County Public Works Director Kevin Callahan commented on the success of the project in Oakley before leaving on a tour of three nearby completion sites with County Council and other community officials. Brown took the opportunity to introduce a new member of the state NRCS staff who was hired to help coordinate the EWP workload across the state. In the accompanying photo, Brown (right) is shown visiting with new EWP coordinator Dave Birdsall at one of the EWP completion sites on the Weber River. Dave Birdsall began work June 18 as a resource conservationist with assigned responsibility to assist with overall coordination of EWP projects across the state, under the direction of State Engineer Bronson Smart. He will work closely with engineering, contracting, resources, and sponsoring county staff to make sure EWP work is completed in a timely and professional way. Before joining us in Utah, he was a resource manager in Florida for a large water management district. Prior to that he has worked with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as a regional biologist and as a wildlife biologist in the Dominican Republic with the U.S. Peace Corps. If you have questions regarding EWP please contact the Coalville Field Office at (435) 336-5853 or the Ogden Field Office at (801) 629-0575. NRCS is an equal opportunity provider and employer. Summit County in the Spotlight as the Park City Medical Center receives American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines Silver Quality Achievement Award Park City Medical Center has received the Get With The Guidelines®-Heart Failure Silver Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. The recognition signifies that Park City Medical Center has reached an aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients with 85 percent compliance for one year to core standard levels of care as outlined by the American Heart Association / American College of Cardiology secondary prevention guidelines for heart failure patients. Get With The Guidelines is a quality improvement initiative that provides hospital staff with tools that follow proven evidence-based guidelines and procedures in caring for heart failure patients to prevent future hospitalizations. According to Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure treatment guidelines, heart failure patients are started on aggressive risk-reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics and anticoagulants in the hospital. They also receive alcohol / drug use and thyroid management counseling as well as referrals for cardiac rehabilitation before being discharged. "The full implementation of national heart failure guideline recommended care is a critical step in preventing recurrent hospitalizations and prolonging the lives of heart failure patients," said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. "The goal of the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines program is to help hospitals like Park City Medical Center implement appropriate evidence-based care and protocols that will reduce disability and the number of deaths in these patients. Published scientific studies are providing us with more and more evidence that Get With The Guidelines works. Patients are getting the right care they need when they need it. That's resulting in improved survival." "Park City Medical Center is dedicated to making our care for heart failure patients among the best in the country. We will continue in our efforts and build off the success of this award by continued implementation of the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure program that allowed us to accomplish this goal," said Rob Allen, the hospital's CEO. Get With The GuidelinesHeart Failure helps Park City Medical Center's staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes.
