Show OPINION PAGE SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS A2 Just a Thought BY CHERYL OVARD LOCAL NEWS NOTES North Summit Open House to introduce changes in proposed Recreation Center Meeting You can do it too The lenses were all gone. There were no welding masks, and no film to cut up to look through, so...We do what we have to do - DIY! Taking a shoe box and razor cutter, and tinfoil and tape, a „ perfect eclipse camera” was crafted - and just in time. The view was tiny, but there was absolutely no chance of hurting your eyes (unless it was straining to see if it was really there) while watching the eclipse on Sunday. Children gathered around to view the tiny white spot which came through the pinhole in the foil covering a square hole on the end of the box. Soon the circle became a cookie with a bit out of it, then a moon on a white ball, and then it was nearly centered! The process was then repeated as it moved to the other side of the white reflection of Old Sol! The screen (hole cut on the side of the box) was rather small, and catching the signal (sun's reflection going through the foil with the pin hole in it) was sometimes a trick. Then...holding still and not shaking the box! The most interesting thing was that it was in reverse - or so it seemed, as it was backwards to what it would have been looking at the eclipse through a special lens made for such a viewing! Whatever it was - and whatever you wanted to call it - it DID work! and so goes another day in history. Viewed a real eclipse from a "real homemade eclipse camera" crafted from a shoebox! What else could you ask for on a day like this...history in the making! The view inside the hole. MAY 25, 2012 June 5, North Summit Middle School Commons area, 6-8 p.m. Please come.
