Takes State in 2A Track for 2012 - A team of girls that just can't be beat! ...wondering what a viking is doing with a deflated football... check out story on Page B2 Today H68 L45 Partly Cloudy Saturday H57 L38 Scattered T-Storms Sunday H60 L38 Scattered T-Storms Monday H71 L41 Sunny Tuesday H74 L41 They were one - in spirit and talent - and it paid off in the end - 150 - 102 points over the 2nd place team - is a phenomenal score! Talent that has been refined, disciplined, and trained towards this goal and end paid off...thanks to the "synchronization" of coaches who lead and support their athletes to bring out the maximum over-all achievement they could muster! It paid off - and they are and should be - proud of their accomplishments! Congratulations to the North Summit Braves - 1st Place in 2A State Girls Track! The Lady Brave Athletes have been coming out of North Summit winning and breaking track records for years. According to the UHSAA Track and field - in 1976 Deanna Vernon broke the 100 yd dash and 220 yd dash records, and Carolyn Vernon in 1979 broke the 330 yd hurdles - and they were only 1A then. In 2003 the 4x400 was won by Vernon, Sargent, Geary, and Peck with a time of 4:03.11. (still 1A) In the 2A Division this year "tops" them all as Erica Birk has set new records alone with the 800 M run, time of 2:14.29; 1600 M. run, time of 4:51.02; 3200 M. run, time of 10:34.66; as well as team records were set by the girls for new state records in the (1600 Meters) (She broke her own record in the 800 meter, won the 3200 and 1600 meter and anchored the medley relay that broke a state record by 11 seconds.) Erica is modest and does not like to boast - but she not only made new records, in Utah, but ranks high in the National level! The Medley Relay: Erica Birk, Samantha Nicholes, Mckenna Vernon, McKell Richins set a new record with a time of 4:05.82. North Summit also won (but not setting a new record) the 4 x 100 Relay with Tristen Northrup, Samantha Nicholes, Jordynn Scholes, Mckenna Vernon and the 4x400 with Erica Birk, Seniors (left to right): Cara Smith, Dentry McQueen, Samantha Nicholes and Erica Birk. Brianna Witt, Dentry McQueen and McKell Richins. It was a day to put down in history as the girls just seemed to be able to out-score every team in the 2A Division, pulling them to a final score and 1st place State Winners with a 159; Emery was 2nd with a score of 57; Beaver 3rd with 51; San Juan 4th with 45; Grand 5th with 44; Parowan 6th with 40; Enterprise and Rowland Hall tied for 7th with 32; Kanab took 9th with 31 and Richfield came in 10th with a score of 24. The view was obstructed in some places (i.e. Northern Utah in the Salt Lake area) for a few moments just after the eclipse began when the dark clouds decided to slowly float by in front of the sun, but... they thankfully broke up just in time to view the rest of the "show". Northern Utah was fortunate enough to view the entire eclipse. Although the "ring of fire was not perfect" in Salt Lake City, as it was a perfect circle as viewed in Kanarraville (see above shots in Kanarraville courtesy of Patrick Wiggins of NASA). The eclipse in the North was still a sight to remember by all who had the glasses, special lens' or film. Some made their way to the Clark Planetarium and the University of Utah observatory to view the eclipse from their protective lenses. Others gathered in neighborhoods and took turns sharing the "eclipse camera box", glasses, lenses, or other contraptions made out of boxes or wood with a pinhole or hole drilled to show the eclipse' reflection onto a white sheet of paper or board. The temperature outside was also perfect, and the Sunday evening breeze blowing just enough to keep it pleasant and relaxing to visit and talk about "other eclipses they had seen, or wondering if they would be able to see the next one when it comes around. Kids could be heard exclaiming - "I see it - I see it-as they viewed the reflection through the small hole cut out of the homemade shoe box eclipse "camera". Others ran to get other neighbors to share the experience with them! "It was great!" "Fun to watch" "O00000's and ah's" when it was a full eclipse then laughing when it resembled a "cookie with a bite out of one corner!" The adventure and view was totally "awesome!" The 2017 eclipse will be put on some of the people's calendars. They were impressed with this one and ready for more! If the eclipse was missed - one can plan to travel to the next one...so...don't forget! News media reporters stated that "this was a chance of a lifetime" for them - and others agreed! Photo rt Y.
