SCHOOL NEWS APRIL 20, 2012 PAGE B3 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS NS FFA Rocks at Deseret Peak North Summit High School and North Summit Middle School practice drill on Tuesday - Elementary School at NS also were successful with the drill CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor Utah Great ShakeOut was the priority of the day's events as students heard the "quake" alarm at 1 p.m. The students dropped to the floor, got under their desks or whatever was near to them, and then "held on tight"! They then went into "lockdown", following into an evacuation. They evacuated to be picked up by their parents. ID had to be brought in by the parent or guardian to take the students home. The drill went as planned, and both Principals, Mr. Hendry and Mr. Richins, were pleased with the attitudes and cooperation by students. Teachers and administrators also practiced the drill inside the classrooms and offices, and participated with them as well. Within about 30 minutes the students were ready to leave, and those not participating were picked up later by their buses to be transported home. The NSMS also did the same routine, and Mr. Richins stated that they were quick and responded well. These students awaited their parents in the gymnasium. N.S. Elementary School students went quietly and quickly to their designated areas, to be picked up by their parents as well. Students had to wait a little longer than the older students, as the "bottle-neck" driving situation caused delays in parents finding places to park. 1st Place Livestock Team 1st Place Horse Team 7.4e 9real 1st Place Floral Team High Individuals FFA REPORTER: DARBY RICHINS Wednesday, April 11, was a huge day for the North Summit FFA Contest Teams! "The kids were prepared earlier with showing each of the schools the video available on the Utah ShakeOut website. The planning began six weeks ago, and the schools were oriented as to what was expected on the 17th of April at 10:15 a.m.!" The Park City Administration, staff, and those assisting with the drill were ready when the actual event took place. Students and teachers performed their tasks, and the "drop, cover, hold on" was a familiar procedure by the time the actual day came. Elementary through high school ages participated throughout the district, and Orgill stated that it was "...good...the key is...it brought awareness..." He went on to say that, ...the personal awareness is one of the valuable outcomes of this drill, and if 4700 kids take home these thoughts to their families, just think of how many will be ready personally in case of an emergency!" The students said it was a good exercise, too. One TMJR student stated that she "...thought that it was something to take very seriously!" NSHS hires new basketball coach Mr. Marques Johnson has been hired, and is already working with upcoming 9thgraders coming up from the middle school as the new basketball coach at North Summit High School.
