Show S.S. SCHOOL NEWS SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS PAGE B2 APRIL 20, 2012 High School students at SSHS participate in drill CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor On Tuesday students at the South Summit High School did the "Drop, Cover and Hold On" drill routine as did several thousand other teens in other high schools. Their purpose, just as the purpose of the other teens, was to complete a drill along with the rest of the South Summit students in each of the schools and "practice" what to do in case of a real earthquake! The high school students at South Summit "evacuated" to the South Summit Middle School for the "Great Utah Shakeout" drill following completing the "drop, cover and hold" in their classrooms or wherever they happened to be within the school building, including teachers and staff members. There they gathered into the gymnasium in the middle of the school - the "wooden" gymnasium" - as it is called. They awaited their parents arrival to pick them up. Parents were asked to first get their older children, then their younger ones, each group located in a different area within the South Summit Middle School. This school, being recently remodeled, was deemed as probably "safer and more earthquakeproof" than the other two schools. High school students who drove were released first, Students filed into the SSMS to their holding spot in the gymnasium until parents were able to show ID and pick them up. Those high school students with keys to drive were excused first. then the parents picked them up. The lines moved quickly, and within the hour follow- ing their arrival at the school, the students were united with their parents or had left on their own. Observers and Middle School Students Drop, Cover and Hold CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor The South Summit Middle School students exited their building in an evacuation after "feeling the initial tremor" of the presumed earthquake at approximately 1:15 pm on Tuesday, April 17. The students, faculty and staff dropped, took cover, then held on until the evacuation was in process. They followed an exit from the building which took them to the west, as the elementary students were entering their middle school to go to their holding room in the auditorium of the SSMS. Students were lined up in an orderly fashion, and hustled out the door, and seeing the students their parents were preparing to exit their vehicles in order to complete the reunification drill which would soon take place. After students left the building, they were then ushered to the other entryway to go to the gymnasium nearest the Recreation Center. This was to be their holding room until their parents came to pick them up. Parents had to pick up their oldest children first, then the youngest, and show picture ID or a letter and ID if acting as guardian of a student. Teachers then took the cards with student's name on it, and found them in the holding room, thus expediting the system with only a few moving through the halls at a time. Principal Wade Woolstenhulme stated that he was "...very pleased with the time - within two minutes of one hour for 1400+ students to enter and exit the building to be reunited with their parents!" School busses were lined up to take hope the non-participating students as they normally would have done on a regular day of school. Debriefing will take place on Thursday, and the problems which they think could be worked out better to expedite this "reunification" and drill will be discussed. "It was a good thing, and went well", stated SS Superintendent Barry Walker. The Elementary School Students stayed in the auditorium until a runner came to take them to their parents. Then they were free to go home. Multiple ages of children made the wait longer, but was still fairly speedy. Parents waited outside for their turn to get in another line inside. In the second line, Parents / Guardians had to show photo ID to get a ticket with their students name, which they then took to a third line. A school employee went to where the students were staged and brought the child to their parent starting with their oldest child first (high school or middle school - then elementary). The younger children filed into the auditorium, with their teacher's name on a row of seats, then they sat there awaiting their parent or guardian to give a "runner" their name, then off they went! The majority of the three schools' children were participating, but if not, busses were lined up to pick the others up and take them home. The bus system actually took longer to get the children in order, as they were not with the same bus as usual - that became quite confusing until each child knew where his or her bus was before loading. When that process was completed, children were then loaded and on their way home, too. They had to wait until each of the other students were reunited with their incoming parent or guardian, so they did not get on their bus to go home until after 3 pm. Not a problem, but something to look at in the future for expediting this portion of the drill's outcome. The majority of administration, teachers and staff felt that the drill went well, students were very cooperative and understanding, and most took it very seriously!
