CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor The Summit County Silver Strikers are a successful fast pitch softball team. They started the season a few years ago with a tournament in Salt Lake area — Salt Lake Firecracker Tournament, winning couple of games there. Girls coming from all corners of Summit County and Salt Lake County were chosen to become "one" in playing championship fast pitch softball. The girls are were playing on their own school's softball teams, and they did not even know some of the other players who are now their teammates and friends! Coach Chester, PCHS Head Softball Coach, stated, "...there is some good talent here..." The World Series Triple Crown is one of the largest girls fast pitch softball tournaments in the Nation. The majority of the teams come from Nevada, California and New Mexico. It is an exciting tournament to watch hundreds of girls and their families can be seen for the three-week period all around Summit County at the baseball / softball parks in all ends of the county. They were easy to spot - playing on baseball fields from one end of the county to the other every day! They played teams from Colorado, Nevada and Washington. Their team played hard, representing their home-town community well! They had previously played in the Firecracker Tournament at the Cottonwood Comlex. Coach Chester has been leading the Silver Strikers since it began. "You will grow," he told the girls a couple of years ago - and they have. Coming from different schools, the girls did not know each other, but it did not take long, and friendships were made. Chester told them at the beginning, "...When you go back to school this year and back to your individual teams, hopefully you will become the leader who will help the rest of the team by influencing them with what you have learned during the summer." That was his ultimate goal...and the following year they will once joined in as a team once more as the Silver Strikers. They are now a solid team of friends and comrades with the same goal in mind...to play the best they can in fast pitch softball tournaments. After they have the 50-75 games "under their belts" they will look and act as a unit — be a team — and win more games! That is how we are going to succeed. Congratulations girls! Beginning this year — starting with the Parade down Old Main Street in Park City they represented Summit County well! The Silver Strikers are sponsored namely by: Premier Transportation, Action Landscaping, Skis on the Run, and Curb It Recycling. Thanks to all of those sponsors and others not listed we had great support this year, and the team appreciates all who supported us! The Silver Strikers. Nine sculptures are on exhibit in Coalville as a joint project of the Summit County Public Art Advisory Board and Coaville City. The sculpture with the most votes will be purchased by Coalville City as permanent public art. This week's featured sculpture is Sunset over the Wasatch, a decorative bench by stone mason and long-time Park City resident George Austin. The sunset scene is an inlay of rock from Brown's Canyon stone quarries, where the artist hand selected red and blonde stone for the sun and darker colors for the mountains. George Austin became a stonemason in the early 1980s. "I have found inlay is a way to achieve artistic expression," he said. George and Rosemary Hillyerd also started Hot Rocks, a company that sells heated stone benches for outdoor winter enjoyment. The bench is for sale at $2,500 and the artists can be reached by contacting Chantel at Coalville City, 3365981.
