CONTINUED FROM FRONT On Wednesday, May 31st 2006, Doug was struck in a hit and run accident while riding his bicycle along Lancaster Ave near 55th Street just after 7 p.m., in Ca. Doug has been a serious commuting, recreational, and competitive cyclist for many years, and many of the cyclists reading this have probably seen him out on many BCP, race training, and city rides, often with his family. He broke several bones and was in a coma for 14 days after the accident, but he cannot remember anything. He has since recovered (completely? one shall never know). Word about the accident spread like wildfire, and blog posts and letters of "get well soon" poured in. Doug, a determined young man, wanting to be a teacher, and is a "great" teacher, in California, decided to help raise money alongside another person, who also went through similar situations with a brain trauma injury. Saul, who also at the young age of 23 suffered a brain injury on a bike accident in April of 2006, suffered with enduring a coma, substantial bodily damage, (as did Doug), and had a bleak outlook for recovery. Miraculously he awoke to a world of doubt of uncertainty, and is now fully recovered. He has created the Raisin Hope Foundation to help oth- ers to find support with this type of injury - raising funding to support the injured, connecting families with the needed support and medical, physical and emotional recovery, and to promote public awareness and understanding of people with disability as a result of brain injury. With Doug joining this cause, he decided to ride from California to New Jersey, telling people about the "cause" and what they are trying to do to help others with Traumatic Brain Injuries. The bicyclist loaded up and hit the road just before the 24th of July weekend, and headed for Rock Springs within the next two days. The Porters drove behind him until he reached Evanston, where Markgraf would spend the night before tackling the "Sisters" on the way up 1-80 towards Rock Springs. Most recently the blogs have kept up to Doug with his stops, meeting wonderful people, also concerned or have known someone with a TBI. He will continue on - arriving in New Jersey in time to return to teach at home where the youth enjoy his instruction as a teacher in school in California. The driver of the boat was arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail, as he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Photo by Cheryl Ovard SCN Editor were winners who finished! The Lions Club Scholarship Breakfast was held with hotcakes and all the trimmings at the City Park. Other events went as planned, with the Dutch Oven Cook-Off, Car Show, Kids Parade and races, and then the talent performance began. Local Talent showed off their best and the memories auction - a tradition which is held to make a donation to the Primary Children's Medical Center. It will be presented to them at a later date. Games, Open-house for the Daughters of Utah Pioneer Cabin, Lion's Trap Shooting Contest filled the balance of the day's activities. The evening began with a sell-out crowd at the Demolition Derby. This event was sold out days before the event - even a couple of weeks before! Fireworks and a dance until midnight completed the long day's celebration. Sunday, a special Pioneer Day Program was presented at the South Summit Middle School Auditorium. A windup of the 100 year celebration - which could not be topped. Special thanks to Billie Sue McNeil and all the other volunteers who helped with this event, and also to each and every person who was involved with the entire month's activities. There were many - and the community and surrounding areas supported this special year's calendar of scheduled activities! Many thanks to them all! Photos by Cheryl Ovard SCN/ Editor Kamas... CONTINUED FROM FRONT lowed by a dance filled the presented by the Broken Heart Rodeo Company, was held on July 21st - complete with fireworks followed by a dance . July 22, Friday evening, the traditional parade down the 100-year old Main Street (of course the dirt road has been covered for many years) with a parade perhaps similar to that of the celebration in 1911 was held! Then the Bull Wars began at 8 pm, again by the Broken Heart Rodeo Company, with cowboys rearin' to jump on the backs of those huge animals and try and out-run the clock! Not many were successful, and as the buzzer only sounded for a few, many went home with only bruises and dirt on their boots! Unfortunately, two participants were injured during the wild cow ride, and we wish them the best in their recoveries! The Bull Wars continued, though, and cowboys rode their best - showing off their tenacity in not only getting on those bulls, but riding as cowboys do - to the end of the evening's events! Saturday began early, as the fun run started at 7 am. Kids and adults alike competed for 1st place, and all 13.89 acres of real property located in Summit County, Henefer, Utah.
