Show PAGE B6 JULY 22, 2011 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS The School Bus Technician Conference held in 2011 at Jeremy Elementary UHP and Technicians Train constantly to keep informed and keep busses safe for the children! CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor The 3- Day Utah State School Bus Technician Conference was held at the bus garage and in the Jeremy Elementary School, which began on June 21, with training classes for all participants. They rotated every 50 minutes, with 20 per class in attendance. The technicians who take care of the school busses for the children in the State of Utah are highly trained, skilled technicians. They com- pete at the conference to see who can locate a problem, decide how to take care of it, then fix it. The competition is also held for Utah Highway Patrol Technicians. Officers drive a UHP truck, and when a problem arises as in accidents or breakdowns on the highway, they are there to oversee and take care of the problem. They are highly trained, and keep up on the computergenerated operations the busses now have in their systems. Both of these operations are skilled in taking care of problems dealing with each bus, and many mechanical parts of busses are run by computers. Ron Hylton, Park City School District Transportation, invited the media to cover the conference, which was well attended. Nearly every county here have a representative for their district and the highlight was when the vendors and booths were set up, who are also the sponsors for this important training. Brad Barker, was a 1st Place winner at Nationals in 2006 from Park City, after winning the Utah Bus Technician competition. Chris Wright took 2nd at Nationals in 2007. The winners this year who will go to Nationals are: Cache County School District - Chris Hodges; Karl Banks took 2nd from Canyons School District, and Christopher Caffey took 3rd, also with the Canyons School District. The team who entered from Weber School District, Bruce Jackson, Brad Eggleston, won 1st. Thanks to the sponsors who contributed to making this conference possible, the vendors who come to the conference each year. They contribute to the safety of the children in the State of Utah, making sure that the busses run in tip-top shape, from technical to equipment, in each school bus. Thousands of children depend on these buses, as do parents and schools. It is a valuable training session, conference, and learning experience for each participant. Thanks also to Brad Barker for making it possible to hold the conference in Summit County.
