This la the substance of ibe report of A. J, Lit vis and I'. J. Crabtree, a ho returned :u Salt ink yesterday after spending two weeks in the ruined city harking after Salt Lake and I'lah people who were in distress, Th executive committee of the Citizens Relief committer will probably bold a meeting today to determine what shall be done with the balance of the reli t fund iu the hands of TreasTncre is a urer W. g. McCornick. balance of between SIA.ihki and 812,-ooand a telegram will probably be sent to Mayor K. K. Srhini'.z of San Fmnciiu-asking what kind of supplies are most needed In the ginned city. As there are about 40.000 refugees In Oakland who are being cared for by the relief commit tee in that city, it is llktly that the citizens commutes will also make inquiries to learn the needs lu that city. The work ot rellevlpg the distress of refugees in bait Lake is practically over, although the transports t km committee still bag everal destitute perrons on Its Lands and a few stragglers are occasionally passing through the city. Consequently not much more money will be needej fur this purpose. The question of the disposition of the baltncc of the relief fund la therefore the point to be settled at this time. "Supplies should be purchased and sent to Ban Francisco and to Oakland. aid Mr. DavU yesterday.. Last Saturday there were 191,637 persons In 8an Francisco who demanded assisthowance. Some of the persons, ever. were not destitute so far as means 1o purchase food was concerned. but their money- - would not buy them anythin for the reason that there was nothing for them to purchase. 3'lie food supplies are in the handa of ths representative of the federal government, and these persona were compelled to get is Hue and taka their tnrna in securing ration. This is a tedious task as they ars compelled to aland In line for several hours before they receive their allotment. "Supplies for not to exceed ten or twelve days were en hand when I left San Francisco last Sunday, and tho destitute people face a famine unless other supplies are rushed to the coast at once. "There are about 40.000 refugees In Oakland and ths relief committee there Is doing all In it power to feed Jhem. However, every car of supplies that reaches Oakland la taken in charge by th government and when ths supplies are distributed of Course the people in Baa : Francisco get the lions - share. The relief committee at Oakland la therefore handicapped in Its work, and what It wanta Is to have supplies shipped direct to ftdwln Stearns, secretary of the Oakland chamber of commerce. If the cars arc billed direct to hint, will fall Into the hands of the Oakland relief committee." Mr, Davla sari that he and Sir. Cra litre located and secured transportation for about 120 destitute Utah people. He says further that ha did not receive a cent of the 6500 appropriated by th citizens' committee In Salt Laka to catabllib Utah headquarters in Oakland and that the money he and Mr. Crabtree spent for relief work was what they had with them out of their own exchequer. Mr. Crabtree corroborated the stale- of Ur. Davis and added that Sentoutside world has no conception of tho ruin In San Francisco. He believe the city will be rebuilt, but thtuka noma time will be required for tha work. C. M. - "My MantiMiit EP. Is Pt-rg-- -- Ed. Crumbs.
