The reduction in research grants is a result of funding cuts — of too much sawdust in the oats that kills thp horse said university President Chase N Peterson in quoting vice president of Healtli sciences who also is leaving the U for another university position Research funding grants are down Do-Det- ing the U for jobs at other universities and in a government post according to John W Seybolt interim dean of the College of Business The departures have had a “devastating effect on morale in the entire college” he said “Every thriving area in the nation is supported by and supports at least one outstanding university with an eminent business school” Mr Seybolt told institutional council members This includes Silicon Valley in California Route 128 in Massachusetts and Research Triangle in North Carolina To shore up faculty salaries the college hopes to attract private gifts percent from last year from $597 million to this year’s $362 million research awards for November of this year and last are down by half 36 from $6 million to $3 million “Our friends in the Legislature have heard us cry wolf for a long time but the research awards always went up” said Dr Peterson Now “it’s a matter of the oats being diluted with sawdust” he said quoting Dr Detmer who tells of a farmer feeding his horse sawdust to make dinars stretch and finally killing the animal Repeated cuts also resulted in five professors or 25 percent of the faculty in the School of Accounting leav and corporate donations said Mr Seybolt One selling point is that the U business school is rated No 1 in quality of recruits it hires and the people it promotes after two years by Procter and Gamble Paper Products Division with annual sales of $15 billion Also the college’s Finance Department is ranked 18th in the nation in research productivity and is ranked 11th in the top five among finance departments in state universities nationally In addition the U’s business school recently was awarded a major federal grant to establish the Intermountain Program in Pacific Rim phased out of the school because “if we can’t do it right we better not do Relations in conjunction with the colleges of social and behavioral science and humanities The program’s objective is to make private companies in Utah and neighboring states more effective exporters to the Far East Another school grappling with money problems is the the U’s mechanical engineering department where faculty salaries remain “very bad” according to a report to the council Last year the department’s budget was cut 13 percent and in the reallocation process regained less it at all" The number of undergraduates in the department has been cut from about 700 students to 600 When industrial engineering is phased out there'll be an additional drop of 150 more students Faculty hires have been matched by new resignations “resulting in no progress toward faculty size restoration” according to the report Recruitment is handicapped by low salaries Currently the department has three open positions that are funded at $30000 each Salaries at comparable universities however begin at than 3 percent President Peterson said that industrial engineering has been $42000 iNew Library Plan May Keep Sandy On County Books I Sandy City Council members have threatened to secede from the county library system and use the nearly $1 million they pay the county to d build a library but a new y proposition may save the union Secession from the county system was seen by some as the only way to get a facility large enough to fit Sandy’s requirements within a reasonable time period - ‘But Salt Lake County Library System Director Eileen Longsworth and Sqndy Mayor Steve Newton have demised a plan that could bring the two entities together as well as take the punch out of a public hearing on the secession issue planned for 8 pm Tuesday at Sandy City Hall -And if the council votes to secede inspite of the new plan Mayor New-tchas promised to use his veto power to keep the city in the county system for one more year ” But the mayor said he believes the council will be satisfied by the new plan which he says “shows good faith" on the part of the county “It’s a Win-wi- n deal” he said The new plan calls for building a library in Sandy that could open by January 1990 — about 18 months sooner than scheduled on the county’s current library construction timetable ‘ To implement the new plan Sandy will create a building authority that will issue an estimated $22 million bonds to finance the in library’s construction and furnish” ings The county would then the building from Sandy over a three-yea- r period Possible sites for the new library are 9400 S 1300 East or 10200 S 1300 East The county owns the 9400 South property a citizen may donate the five to eight acres needed at the 10200 South site Mayor Newton said The new plan was approved by the county library board Wednesday Mayor Newton said county commissioners Mike Stewart and Dave Wat-- 1 son both showed support for the plan The county already operates the 10710 square foot Peterson Library 9340 S 700 East but local residents don’t think the facility is large enough for one of the state's fastest growing cities A report compiled by the Sandy Library Committee noted that in the last two years 1800 new homes have been built in the city adding more than 8000 residents city-owne- city-count- CHRISTMAS SALE ' OUR GREATEST CHRISTMAS SALE IN 21 YEARS mms enma open 9 am to 10 pm One Pant Suits Two Pant Suits All Wool Suits Dacron and Wool Suits Western Style Suits Single Breasted Suits Famous Brand Suits !
