A search of court records shows Wood has a 10-year history of arrests. In 1991, he was convicted of assault and sentenced to 60 days in jail. After entering a guilty plea to felony forgery charges in 1994, Wood made news when he attempted te pe from the T minimum-security facility at the Utah State Prison. Wood placed a dummyin his bed to fool guards, but was caught between two security fences after apparently tripping an alarm. Wood had been sent back to prison three months before the escape attempt andafter being paroled in 1983. In 1992, Wood's wife and mother of two of his children was granted a protective order against him. She filed for divorce a month later. Seven years later, the now ex-wife filed for a permanent restraining order against him. That same‘ year, Wood was granted a divorce from a woman bearing a first name similar to the ex-wife's, so it was not immediately clear if the two had divorced and remarried. Wood pleaded ‘guilty last year to felonytheft charges and to giving false information to government agencies. He was sentenced to the 7 months he * All Sunday, July 8, 2001 already had served in jail. Earlier this year he was granted his third divorce. Calls to Wood’s home went unanswered Saturday. A woman answering the phone at a nearby residence identified herself as Wood’s sister and said she did not wantto discuss the case. The four surviving Roosevelt officers who responded to the shooting are on administrative leave while the Uintah County Sheriff's Office investigates. : Gurr’s death stunned this city of 4,500 in eastern Utah’s Uinta Basin. It seemed Saturday as if everyone had known him. “This is a devastating blow,” said Russ Cowan, a Roosevelt City Council member. Gurr was the sort of police chief who wouldn’t let himself get stuck behind a desk directing his11 officers in the field. “I can remember so many instances -he came out while he was off duty,” said Brad Draper, a former Roosevelt police officer working for Adult Probation and Parole. “If you served your post honorably, he’d back you 100 percent.” Gurr was sworn in as a Roosevelt police officer in 1974 after a tour of duty in Vietnam anda short stint with the FBI. He becamepolice chief in 1978. ECKE: eral and state parole violator, emerged from his truck, Hooley said, and began firing an SKS assaultrifle at theofficers. The officers returned fire and Gurr fell to the pavement. As fellow officers gave him aid, he died in the middle of the Gurr’s death bore a stark similarity to that of the last officer slain on duty in the Uinta Basin. Adolph Bush, a Ute tribal officer, was killed Sept. 19, 1967, while responding to a report of a man beating a woman in Randlett. When Bush entered the home, the man shot him with a deerrifle. Funeral arrangements for Gurr were being made through Hullinger-Oplin Mortuary in Roosevelt. An employee there said Saturday that family members were still awaiting the arrival of a son from out of town andit could be midweek before arrangements were complete. AUTO VaR street.
