The debate, which followed the Initial session of the finance committee in opening one month of public hearings on the house tariff bill, was participated in by half a dozen senators, including both the Republican and Democratic leaders. Borah's statement came after Senator Watson had expressed the opinion that it would be impossible to limit the revision to duties on farm products, which the Idahoan favors. "It is perfectly apparent that there is to be general tariff revision and there is no prospect of concluding that before the regular session in December," declared Borah. "That Is true," said Senator. Wat' son. "Then I am ready to vote to adjourn this congress at once." declared Borah. The Republican leader said he did not regard President Hoover's program as restricted to rate changes in favor of agriculture and that he personally favored "as general a revision as was manifested in the bouse bill." He told Senator Robinson of Arkansas, the Democratic leader, however, that pending conferences he was not prepared to say how far bther Republican senators would go in that respect.
