Ornery, old cusses like Jesse James became legends because of popular dime novels. Thanks to modern movies, outlaws like Butch Cassidy have metamorphosed from bad guys into good guys. In reality most of these rustlers and robbers and even an occasional sheriff, died as Dead Horse Point -- Page 10 and shot Bill dead. Jesse James has been portrayed as a hero, but he was actually far from it. During the Civil War, Jesse they lived, not romantically but violently. For instance, Wild Bill Hickock was a lawman with an attitude. He was a nice dresser and a crack shot, but he could be ruthless in killing enemies, even though some were unarmed. He was so good at what he did that he once accidently gunned down his own deputy. Bill had a penchant for card playing and usually played with his back to the wall in order to watch the room. However, the one time he broke his own rule, someone named Jack McCall came up from behind took up company with blood- letting raiders. 82,271 people have visited the park, compared to 82,194 for the same period in 1993.
