Show THE SALT .LAKE TRIBUNE, WEDNESDAY MORNING, JULY 7, 1920. OF NEXT SENATE E Two Major ' Parties Wil Make Effort for Contro of the Upper House v iSix Republican and Nine Democratic Seats Debatable in List of Thirty-two. Special to The Tribuae. WASHINGTON, July I The election next November la going to be almoat aa , 'Important In Its bearing on the senate Ss It will be on the presidency, and will determine whether the new admtnlstra tton. Is to have the support of the sen ate or whether It will come In handt capped by a senate of the opposite party. It is by no means certain that the sen ate will be controlled by the same party which elects the next president. In the present senate the Republicans ha vi a majority of two, or one. If Sen. ator Newberry of Michigan Is not In' eluded- - Thirty-tw- o senators are to ' be elected next November and of those whose terms expire, fifteen are Repub Ucans. Of the seventeen Democrats whose terms expire, eight come from the surely Democratic states of the solid - South, leaving only nine senate seats now held by Democrats for which the Re publicans can make any real contest. Viewed from the other standpoint, .there are at least six Republicans who are not sure of redaction, anyone of whom may be succeeded by a Democrat. Early for Predictions. Hla election occasioned some surprise, although Missouri turned up In the Republican column in the Roosevelt campaign and ones sines then. The break between the admin titration and Senator Reed may have tendency to spilt the Democracy again, and In that event Spencer may be returned If he Is renominated. In Ohio a successor must be chosen to Senator Harding and Repub Ucans feel confident of their abiUty to carry that state. They felt all along that the one Democrat that might be elected was Governor Cox and If uiey do not have Cox to contend with they count the state as safe. This Is not, strictly spsaklng, a fair statement of the situs tion, for Ohio In recent years ceased to be a sure Republican state and the sen atorial contest in Ohio may be deter mined by the result of the presidential campaign. la t ' - Len roots Seat Contested. INDIANAPOLIS. U. S. A. . Two other Republican senators, Wadsworth of New York and Watson of Indiana, ara going to have their hands full this fall. Wadsworth baa been the ob ject of frequent and bitter attacks by the suffragists because of his prominence in his fight against woman suffrage. Aside from this, Wadsworth has mads an exceptional record In the senate for a new man, particularly since ha became chairman of the committee on military affairs; and, judged by his record, he ranks wall up among the Republicans of t (he senate. New York does not always select Its senators because of their abll Is more Inclined to do so than Ity, but most states and It would ba fair at this time to say Wadsworth had mors than an even break. If ha Is defeated It will be the suffrage Influence that eliminates him. As for Watson, hs halls from a state that always manages to stags real political fight. Watson himself la credited with being one of the shrewd- est politicians In Indiana and Is making It hla business this year to help carry ' Indiana for Harding. Republican cam paign managers believe that Watson can be reelected, but the Democrats list. In- - 1569. I: c . - " ' ' J I ; , ; dlana a a tat In which they expect to make a aenate gain. Eliminating the eenatora from the eolld south, there are several Democrats whose seats will be contested with some assurance of success. Senator Beckham of Kentucky Is ons whose seat will BY vigorously contested and the Republicans are hopeful not onlv of carrying that state for Harding, but of repeating the victory they rolled up there last year when they elected Kentucky's first governor. - It would not be safe :o list Kentucky as a likely Republican state. Sure Winner. "If Coffee bothers You, drink Chamberlain 'One Democrat the Republicans vacancy. If Senator Borah gives his support to the Republican nominee this fall and this nominee may be Gooding again Senator Nugent can be counted out; but If the Republican1 factional right Is carried Into the senatorial election, Nugent may be returned. The Democrats have only a chance of. reelecting Senator Phelan ot California. He comes from a normally Republican state and a atate which Idol one-to-t- ises Hiram Johnson, for whom. Phelun has no use and with whom he never cooperates. There Is no nartlcular reason whv Phelan should expect to be returned and only a Democratic landslide brough" about bv the presidential campaign wilt return Phelan to the aenate, , , do not berlain of Oregon. Senator Chamberlain has been twice elected governor and twice elected senator with the aid of a vote and his personal large Republican popularity Is such that he 'will be returned to the senate for a third term unless there is some unexpected political upheaval In Oregon. Only a flnke would enable the Republicans to defeat Senator Gore of Oklahoma, but they are strongly hopeful of electing a Repnbtlcan.to succeed Senator Henderson In Nevada. The result of the Nevada contest will depend largely upon the Identity of the 'Republican nominee. Two strong Republicans ara after this senate seat and If 'one of. them Is named and later has the support of his opponent. Senator Henderson may end- his public csresr on Msrch 4 next. Peter Norbeck Is almost sura to be elected senator in South Dakota, succeeding Senator Johnaon, a Democrat, Norbeck Is one of the strong Republicans of the northwest and even now the Democrats have despaired of carrying that state In the senate fight.
