A daughter, Mrs. H. K. Hudson, lives in New York. Mr. De Koven Vas the founder of the Washington Symphony orchestra, of which he waa also conductor. He waa the composer of a number of operas, and also bad written various music for orchestra and piano. He also had written a large number of songs, includA Reing. Oh. Promise Me, and cessional. Among De Koven s best known operas are Rip Van Winkle, which had ita premier in Chicago two weeks ago, and Robin Hood, The Mandarin, Her Little Highness, The and Wedding trip. United States marines and Haitian gendarmerie yesterday repelled an attack on Port au Prince, the Haitian Capital, by a force of 300 bandita, more than half of whom were killed, wounded or captured, after being pursued outside the city. Russell, commanding the marine forces and gendarmerie in Haiti. The bandit force. Colonel Russell said, approached Port au Prince in three columns, which immediately were met and driven back. Certain revolutionary elements of the city attmpted to join the bandits in the assault, he said, adding that he believed the fate of the attacking foreea should be V sufficient to prevent an early repetition of the assault. Secretary Baker, replying to a house resolution, reported today that since the signing of the armistice, 17,354 promotions had been made in the army, including 15,450 in the A. E. F. and 1904 in the forces in this country. . Promotion among the troops overseas were divided v as follows: - 4778 among the combat forces, 10,546 among the noncombatent, and 126 in the chemical warfare service.
