The following is a copy of a letter xrntten bv bamuel Muidock Esq to the McGregor Times, in refermee to the ancient mound builders whose remains are found in such vast qu:m-titie- s in Ciavtou county, in this fcitate. It will doubtless prove interesting to He s;iys, " 1 he our ninny readers. Dccorah Republican is correct in stating that 'I had estimated the 'Mound Guilders' in Clayton county alone ut 100,000. and rather than fall below th'it estimate I would increase the number, I not make this estimate on my own observations alone, but I can refer you to Dr. Linton, of Granville, who is one of the most careful men, also the ablest and most scientific man of our State, who has been with me in nearly all my investigations among the niouud builder, and who fully endorses the estimate that I have made. I have stated that the round mounds coutain from five to fifteen or more skeletons, and that these round mounds alone in our county can bo counted by the thousands, while the elongated mounds, raugiog from one lined red to six hundred feet in leuglh, are equally numerous, and all of them euiitafuiog more or less of these skeletons. Dr. Linton also informed me that he had uncovered one o! those round miunds, near Clayton, and on a cure-fu- l examination he concluded it con tainod over a hundred dead bodies. Now, when I can trace both classes of these mounds continuously in a circuitous route of over fifty miles through our county, while through the circle they are everywhere in tfrht. I do not think I have over estimated the number of dead con tained in them, but rather think I have estimated them too low.' I have further stated that in nearly all these rout.d mounds thcav skeletons are in a remarkable good Hate of preservation, and can be obtained by the thousand, and in no subsequent investigations have I seen iuso to retract the statement; while in the elongated mounds I have found the skeletons more decayed, moro eaten or gnawed by mice and other rodents, and sometimes failed to find any trace of bones in them. Theso facts lead me to the conclusion that the elongated mosnd3 were the work of a race of mound builders and were made ages before the round ones, sin co investigation in tie long mounds have shown but few bones, and these in an advanced state of decomposition, which clearly proves that these nomadic races made both theso character of mounds the receptacles of their dead. Instead of and over stateour ments in regard to the wonderful who built theso mounds and fieople dead among us, I can assure you, sir, that the halt has not be told. GEORGE W. TURNER, C. B.
