Show The DaUy V. Uuh Chronicle, Friday, December Page Seven 9, 1983 Shivoir on ti iron boirs by Sam Dunn Chronicle staff of the 19th century, few pirates were left who prowled the seven seas. One of the last great buccaneers was William By the close Henry Hayes, on whose life Nate and Hayes is loosely based. Tommy Lee Jones portrays Hayes, cast as ruffian with a heart of gold who claims he never murdered, raped or stole from innocent people. Hayes usually protects women, always wears white, drinks like a fish and grins infectiously. The storty pits Hayes against Capt. Ben Pease, a seedy villain if the re ever was one. Pease murders and plunders whenever he gets the chance, always wears black, flaunts his rotted teeth and leers at women. The complex plot includes a wholesome, Victorian missionary couple, Sophie and Nate (Jenny Seagrove and Michael O'Keefe). The dastardly Pease kidnaps Sophie to sell her into white slavery, and Nate joins with Hayes to rescue her. In the course of their adventures (almost as improbable as Raiders of the Lost Ark), Sophie and Nate must choose between their Victorian values and an early demise. Fortunately for themselves and the movie, many of their ideals dissolve at gunpoint. Their capitulation to human folly not only perpetuates the story, but also makes Sophie and Nate somewhat more : than standard melodrama characters. Sophie, our Nell in yellowing lace, screams for her hero as Pease, a veritable Snidely Whiplash, ties her to the tracks, so to speak. . But Nate and Hayes essentially is melodrama. The struggle of good vs. evil leads to a Toys ate art in this exhibit predictable end. Given a few musical numbers (preferably not from Kristy "Pirate Movie" McNichol), this film might be passed off as bastardized Gilbert and Sullivan. Walt Disney and Ian Fleming would have approved of this swashbuckler. Hayes dispatches foes like James Bond, with low-ke-y quips and composure. In moments of crisis, I expected Captain Nemo to come to our heroes' rescue in the Nautilus.Afari and Hayes also parallels Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Both films feature outlaw heroes who continue to ply their trade long after their Golden Ages have passed. Nate and Hayes includes a colorful cast of minor characters: a Bismarckian count, ferocious Polynesians, honky-ton- k women, black pirates, Asian pirates and generic pirates complete with eye patches and peg legs. One salty dog has even carved his peg to resemble a skull. This film is a boyhood fantasy. Without doubt, the life of a real pirate was 99.9 percent boring. The beer was warm, the women cold, the rations wretched, the combat rare and nothing to smile a toothless smile about. . There is no buried treasure in Nate and Hayes, so don't go looking for any ponderous message. Enjoy it for what it is good, mostly clean fun. Nate and Hayes takes us into a world that probably never did exist, a place where a man was only free as his sword arm was strong and where no woman could come between good buddies. Aesthetically, this film is no worse than most swashbucklers, and as entertainment it is obvious both the cast and the audience have a good time. - hand-to-ha- nd K TICK Discount ski passes are sold in the Student Involvement Center.
