Beckstead, author of "Cowboying: A Tough Job in a Hard Land" will be in Vernal on Saturday, July 25 to entertain members mem-bers of the National Outlaw and Lawman Association (NOLA) during dur-ing their convention. Members will begin arriving in Vernal on Wednesday, and their convention will run through Saturday night Beckstead is an author, ballad writer and a cowboy poet. Since the publication of "Cowboying: A Tough Job in a Hard Land" 11 months ago, it has received the highest sales volume in the 43-year history of the University of Utah Press. This book, whose forward was written by film and television star Wilford Brimley, is a comprehensive comprehen-sive history of the cowboy in Utah. Through a collection of rare photographs, pho-tographs, research and interviews, the author brings to life the fascinating fascinat-ing and colorful cowboy culture in early Utah. There are even accounts by old timers who came face-to-face with Butch Cassidy. "I always wanted to write the story sto-ry of cowboying in Utah because it had never been told and now I have done it," said Beckstead, a native na-tive of Utah. Beckstead's cowboying book has received favorable reviews across the country including the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and just recently, it was reviewed re-viewed in a four-page article by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Convention participants will also be treated to local and national speakers. They will tour the Browns Park area on Friday to visit historic outlaw spots.
