Show STATE NEWS HANS brotherson DEAD mt pleasant dec hans brotherson was born in denmark in 1849 and died here this morning at 2 mr brotherson Broa herson cameto this country when 10 years ot age anil has been a resident of this place thirty nine years he waa married thirty one years ago the past october and was the father of fifteen children nine bons eons and six daughters ajl 01 whom with the widow are living L A dafni CONVICTED junction dec 29 the district court today closed a three days session here and the hollowing lol lowing business was transacted state vs leal A davis defendant convicted by jury of the crime of adultery the acta show a very aggravated case and one indeed most revolting defendant Is a married man very poor and with a wife and family of five children under twelve years 0 age who are now in a deplorably destitute condition besides having the disgrace of their husband and fathers crime upon them on april ath last he visited the isome of mrs day in his home town of to repair her sewing machine mrs day Is a woman of rather weak mind and finding her alone davis took advantage ot her loneliness ana credulity and simple anu made her believe the devilish story that a life of virtue was by the rich and well to do to the poor to be lived by the poor only and that it was no sin but a great honor to do as he told her the upper classes of society all did having been thus beguiled the poor crea iture submitted no doubt a most severe sentence would have been imposed upon dails in fact the court in passing sentence so said but the crying need of his support by his hungry babies was portrayed to the court by the defendants counsel and added to this was a recommendation of mercy by the jury the sentence was nine months in the state prison SHERIFF eliest WILL NOT QUALIFY castle gate dec 29 hyrum allcox be only man elected in carbon county on the democratic ticket at the late election it is said will not qualify tor sheriff he has a good position here with the pleasant valley coal company and there Is not enough difference in his salary to justify bis moving his family to price the county seat the sheriff of this county has heretofore been paid a salary of 1000 a year but the board cut it down to which takes effect the first of the year OPPOSE compulsory vaccination lehl dec SO to vaccinate or not to has become a most important question with our citizens on the alth dinst the local health board in compliance with the orders from the state aboard issued an order to the school board not to admit any unvaccinated teachers or hupila to the public schools on or after january 1 1901 there was great opposition to this order which it enforced would evidently result in closing the schools tody in public meeting a notice was given out that the school board waa going to enforce the order and the quarantine physician also announced that he would vaccinate free all iwho were unable to pay tor the same but an error beems to have been committed for last evening he board after wrestling with the question till after midnight unanimously adopted the following racy and interesting document lehl dec 29 1900 to tho honorable chairman of the board of health of lehl city dear sir in reply to your communication of december alth demanding that 01 and alter january 1 1901 we refuse any and all pupils and teacher id mission to the public schools of our city who cannot show certificates ot successful vaccination or immunity from smallpox we submit the following first A careful investigation of the law governing school attendance doea not make it apparent to us that we should be legally justified in obeying your order second the general coaling foaling of opposition to vaccination has led us to conclude that a compliance with your order would bo the means of keeping out ot school a majority of the children who would otherwise be in attendance in health third we concur in the expressed opinion of your honorable body and the medical fraternity ot this county that children are not liable to contract the disease in the school as they are upon the streets or in otho gatherings and as an evidence suggest that no case ot contagion in our city has been traced directly to ihu public schools a Fourth The number ot quarantine flags have been reduced from nineteen to three with present indications that those now remaining will be removed before january 7 1901 the date set tor the opening 0 the s in ot the facts and conditions gerein set forth we feel justified in refusing to obey the requirements ol 01 your order and shall admit to our schools all the healthy children ot age who may apply for admission youra respectfully W 8 ievans chairman S P CrO ODWIN secretary J B GABBIE treasurer school board of district no 12 |
