A M ! : SECRETARY OP FI DEPARTMENT CIES Harry T. Cowburn Fails to Rally From Recent Appendicitis Ap-pendicitis Operation-Harry Operation-Harry T. Cowburn, secretary of the Salt Lake fire department, former city councilman, admired and esteemed by his fellow employees in the service and by a multitude of friends, died yesterday yester-day morning in a local hospital, after having undergone an operation for appendicitis ap-pendicitis last Sunaay. jruneraJ services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock in the Twenty-eighth ward chapel. Interment will be in the City cemetery. When word of Mr. Cowburn 's death was received yesterday morning at tho central fire station, the flag was hung at half-mast and emblems of mourning were placed on the doors of the station and the desk the secretary had occupied. Expressions of sorrow and regret were general from the chief, officers of lower rank and the men of the department generally. Many who passed by inquired the significance of the lowered flag and upon J earning the cause added their tribute of sorrow and expression of affection, af-fection, for Harry Cowburn was known and appreciated " by hundreds of men throughout the city. Mr. Cowburn was born December IS, 1853, in York, England. Ho came to Salt Lake thirty-eight years ago, being successively in the employ of the old Utah Central railroad, P. J. Moran contractor, con-tractor, and the Cunnington Hardware company. In 1904 he became secretary of the Salt Lake fire department, serving serv-ing until near the end of 19U6, serving in the city council from 3 907 until 1909. In 1912 he was again chosen secretary of the fire department and held that position posi-tion to the time of his death, Mr. Cowburn was a counselor in the bishopric of the Twenty-eight ward and a member of the high council of the Salt, Lake stake. He is survived by his widow, five children, Certrude, Bertha ,R., William P., Clara R. and Henry P., residing at 442 North Sixth West street. A brother resides in California. The Veteran Volunteer Firemen's association as-sociation will hold a special meeting this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the association hall in Canyon road to consider plans for the funeral of Mr. Cowburn, which will be under the immediate direction of Chief W. H. Bywater. |
