Show I 1 I 1 I 1 I 1 1 f I 1 dads I 1 I 1 I 1 column e 1 X I 1 1 WM WINI REYNOLDS II 11 IS SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT grasshoppers dear dad someone said it Is not bad to grow old when you have old friends to grow old with alas most of my friends have gone before and the worst of it Is they dont come ba back k to tell me how bow they like it over there but I 1 started to tell you about grasshoppers not the natives so called that can be found almost anywhere but the terrible EgYPt egyptian lan locust that came to utah in the and by the millions an hour or two before sundown the sky became darkened with them arid and they came to stay and devour everything that was eatable grain grass trees leaves shub bery etc in a short tune time they would turn beautiful green meadows orchards pastures verdant hills and valleys into barren deserts leaving destitution and starvation tor for man and beast the worst Is yet to come about 10 or 11 the next day clouds of them would rise and fly away in thi the same general direction leaving myriads of the females that bored their hind parts into the earth about an inch deep the size of a lead pencil depositing theu their eggs therein which in the spring hatch ed out billions of 01 the little pests peat which would again eat up everything that was wa growing then when able to fly left toi for other sections leaving but few in those days flour was shipped from california and 2500 per hundred pounds a so 0 I 1 am safe in saying there were no scraps of bread found in the ash cans seed grain was very scarce and expensive causing great hardship on the early settlers of utah yours truly WM REYNOLDS april 6 1932 P S I 1 am so 0 near blind I 1 tear fear you will not be able to read what it Is all about W R JACK FRUMP IS LIKE THE REST KEST OF US many of our readers will remember J W frump who taught school in our city for a time and worked in our mines also since leaving paria city several I 1 years ago he has married and settled in I 1 ohio and for a long time past has been principal of the high school in lynchburg I 1 the gentleman has retained his membership with the elks of this city I 1 and has always of course kept in touch with park city through the columns of the record the past week secretary J ed paxton of the elks received a letter I 1 from mr air frump under date of march pertaining to lodge matters in i which he said in part dear J ed I 1 read an article in dads column in the park record of march under the name of owen U owen ofru moore which fits me at the pres present lit time exactly the first national bank of lynchburg closed its doors recently and took me for all I 1 had I 1 was a stockholder in the institution and had all my cash therein and now money and I 1 are absolute strangers and liquidation of my indebtedness Is delayed temporarily tell friend dad to continue the record and payment in full will be made sooner or later cheer up J W the record will continue to go forward to your address with the promising prediction that it if we live long enough we will see the end of the long drawn out depression and bank failures and starving families and tree free soup houses and grafting politicians end and low metal prices etc then we will all bei be happy and sm smiling illing and wondering what I 1 it was all about during the hoover administration I 1 ui S 9 9 afi NATH E PARK CITY GIRL WRITES WHITES interesting LETTER FROM I 1 H the following interesting letter was waa received this week from mrs edith dark clark gabriel for two years past a resident of honolulu hawaii I 1 mrs gabriel Is the youngest daughter of 0 the late mr air end and mrs thos A dark clark for many years well known residents of park city the old dark clark home still standing at the head of heber avenue there was a large family of the clarks claries all at tending ng our public and high schools end and all gaining high positions in a business way and socially walter the oldest son gaining a nationwide nation wide fame as an electrician tri tr many of our readers will remember the dark clark family and will be interested te rested in the following letter honolulu hawaii P 0 box 2390 march 28 1932 2932 dear mr Bad don your letter and that of rev gregg were received last week and I 1 want to thank you both tor for your kindness in sending me documentary evidence of my birth I 1 feel quite sure that the affidavit which you furnished will be quite sufficient I 1 cannot however understand the discrepancy in dates inasmuch ra as my birth date entered in the family bible Is august 1896 I 1 am wondering if you have me confused with my sister ethel who was born august 1888 2888 as I 1 noticed rev greggs letter was addressed ethel dark clark gabriel my sisters ethel and florence are both in spokane washington I 1 are am the youngest of the family next older than myself being spencer whom you will probably remember as 25 being one of your particularly obstreperous repe r newsboys since his return from the war he has married entered the U D S customs service and Is now the father of 0 two of the most beautiful little gills I 1 haie hae ever seen been it was a real thrill to hear from someone who remembered me as achlin a i child for my life has been so full of moving about that it Is always a question ott nore or less new hew antl X appreciated sincerely trie the good wishes yov extended I 1 I 1 1 11 now a word about myself in case yov you 11 are re ir then I 1 shall omit family aleto stetary ry and try to tell you so bething about the islands although It Is possible you have been here I 1 was wa married shortly aft after erthe the ward war in 1919 and went to live in seattle where when xay my mother came to live with me and I 1 I 1 where she made her home until her death in 1928 A short time previous to her death I 1 lost my husband and in the ensuing panic of finding myself utterly alone I 1 came to honolulu not knowing i a thing about it and having no friends I 1 or acquaintances fortunately tor for me I 1 I 1 found a position within a week after ifould landing with the famous hawaiian pineapple company as secretary to mr dole but after being there six months went into the advertising business writing copy and making display layouts my employer met with financial difficulties and i could not afford to pay the salary to which I 1 was accustomed so when a 1 tion with the bishop trust company limited was offered to me in january I 1 it was accepted but im sadly afraid my i heart Is still in the advertising game I 1 am still writing considerable publicity w which keeps me in practice but writing publicity in an atmosphere of stocks and 1 bonds easy to do this however Is just a stopgap stop atop gap I 1 realize there Is no future tor for me in the business world here it Is much too small email and if 1 things ever k up on oil the mainland it Is my intention to return and see I 1 it f I 1 cant make a success ot of something and now about the islands too much cannot be said in its praise it Is a veritable pagan paradise with american plumbing my only regret Is that I 1 did not see it fifty years ago before it became so very commercialized sometimes I 1 think the polynesians would have been much better off without the advent ot of the missionaries they are a loving peace biding abiding happy go lucky people but there arent many of them left civilization ha staken care ot of that I 1 this Is a peculiar place and it Is hard to realize that only a hundred years or so a ago the few inhabitants were so called savages now the streets are paved the downtown down town district comparatively large and very modern the buildings masterpieces ot of art each surrounded by lawn and palm trees with a large downtown down town hotel comparable to some ot of the larger ones in spokane or salt lake at waikiki beach which is of course the mecca ol of the tourists there are three huge hotels the royal hawaiian ot of moorish design in pink stucco and bright blue trimmings Is huge and set in grounds extending for acres around it the grounds once having been those surrounding I 1 one of the royal palaces ot of king kamehameha the palms are hundreds of feet high in the patio immediately in front on the street side of the hotel 1 and it Is there beside a beautiful hate fo fountain I 1 antin that the sunday night concerts of hawaiian music are held I 1 the beach Is curved in the shape of a huge crescent and viewed from the water the royal koyal hawaiian hotel and the moana mo na and waikiki hotels are set like jewels against the green hills and blue I 1 sky the sand Is almost pure white coral and the water at least a dozen different shades of vivid blue and purple all the colorings are vivid there never could be imagined anything as brilliant as the green of the foliage and the gorgeous colors of the flowers which bloom the year around I 1 used to think the pictures I 1 saw of the islands were highly colored but no artist could mix colors as bright as those that actually exist I 1 went ent tor e a ft ate ride around the island saturday turdy afternoon r and we stopped to view a scene which if painted no one would believe there Is one spot where the tbt volcanic earth Is brick red the abe grass end and trees against it a brilliant green we were on a toad road against one hillside and looked across a little valley which constituted a dairy far farmin farm mIa in the foreground was the valley itself with a ridge in the middle of it so sharp on the top you believe a fly could stick on it but there were the clean cleall looking black anil and white cattle grazing along the red and green ridge the beautiful blue ocean in the background and an even more brilliant blue sky studded with fleecy whits white clouds it Is breath taking even to one who has been here for two years As tor for the population that Is the sad part in the olden days the missionaries intermingled with the Ha Hawaii ans built up estates and money until many of the families are very very wealthy and are called hapl hables meaning part p a r t whites most of the influential political positions are held by the full blooded Ha Hawaii ans or those having some white blood then in the early days japanese filipino and chinese labor was imported tor for work in the sugar cane fields sugar of course being the principal crop of the islands the japanese now form a greater part of the population and the intermingling of the poorer classes ot of hawal lans jana with various orientals Orient als and other nationalities gives elves rise to a polyglot mixture which Is causing a great brest deal lea of trouble here now the old Ha Hawaii ans as Is the case with any native tribes of various classes the royal families the chiefs and the ordinary fisher men imen and lesser workers the defendants tot the royal line most 0 of which now low baya haye 1 dome Bome white blood are regal in baring bearin gand and utterly distinguished it is ia thel clawer classes class which have mingled mingle d with the orientals orient als and other races toa eluding porto rico a race consistently despised you have undoubtedly read something ot of the crime wave which has swept the thea I 1 islands resulting in the arrest of five men charged with assault on a wife ot of a naval officer the of one of the boys by the mother husband and two others connected with the navy and his death mrs fortescue lt Mass bassle leand and the other are now awaiting trial mr aar darrow having arrived last week to defend them I 1 the five ave men tried were released after the jury tailed failed to convict them the mainland papers and various magazines I 1 greatly exaggerated the condition for I 1 there are no savages lurking in jungles it if there were any jungles which there are not and ive never had a moments tear fear the hawaiian islands have never had 1 I 1 need ot of any metropolitan police system it Is the first time any such thing has occurred and the mainland being tired ot of depression have anything else to do than to make much ot of it I 1 in my heart I 1 cant help blaming the I 1 army and navy element this Is the largest military outpost out ot america and thel consequently the major portion ot of the white population are army and navy men their wives and families the navy crowd I 1 Is particularly cocky not only toward the natives but to other white people as well As a rule the younger officers are for the first time released tor for duty e after tour four strenuous years in the academy and they for the most part run wild they have the erroneous idea that they own the earth and can call do as they please without criticism as a long as it I 1 Is within army and navy regulation the social life down here Is strenuous for the reason that there Is so little entertainment that I 1 wild parties are the rule there Is a great deal of drinking which to my surprise was done very openly the ral main beverage being a distilled rice whiskey called never having been an I 1 ardent prohibitionist although I 1 dont drink at all the freedom with which tile the islands evaded the prohibition law rather tickled me guess I 1 have a peculiar sense of humor the assault crimes which have been committed have of course been terrible and the decidedly rotten political situation 1 resulted in very many convictions vict ions and due to the race mixtures I 1 th there ere Is an extremely difficult situation t to face in getting it straightened up I 1 i cant hazard a guess as to how it Is going to come out sometimes I 1 can close 1 my eyes and visualize the peace slid and beauty ot of this place a hundred years ago I 1 before we white people in our egotism 1 decided too the natives should be taught what sin was and then try to regain their lost happiness I 1 I 1 A friend of mine just returned from the fiji islands where they yet absorbed the white mans civilization aud and he be says they have the one thing the tha white man has struggled tor for centuries to attain peace and happiness I 1 have just about decided that my next trip will be to samoa and fill fiji after all what Is all this mad scurrying about I 1 j the hawaiian islands as you undoubtedly know consist of a group of seven islands oahu bahu hawaii maul Kauai Molokai Mol okal lanai and another very small 11 one whose name ame n I 1 cant at the arment in moment recall honolulu Is situated on the island ot of oahu bahu an island whose circum terance ferance Is 13 less than a hundred miles prom from one point namely koko read head one can an see sec which Is 25 miles across the channel hawaii Is the largest island af rf tho gro group groop op and on which the famous kilauea volcano Is located sugar cane ard and plu carple era er grown on a all the islands and from hawaii comes the fam oun ann kona coffee all the islands are fairly mountainous honolulu has as a background two ridges the koolau range rang on side and the on the other and they are quite high with sharp harp 8 peaks forever capped by fluffy clouds and waterfalls running down their sides A friend just returning from the island aland ot of hawaii said that mauna lon and were snow capped I 1 have 1 not seen the other island both because ot lack of opportunity and nd lack of mo money ney due to the tact fact that it Is possible ble to get it the steamship companies charge ap an continued on oa page four dads column continued from page one outrageous amount for the trip to hawaii and return A distance of a little over a hundred miles and it costs or t transportation alone this Is a wealthy mans country both because of the wealth already existing here and because of the atmosphere created by the tourists who have been an and d always will be the wealthy class it I 1 IS a hard country to work in but the wa wages are good and the hours are short it Is hard to work here because of the climate principally since it Is so perfectly gorgeous that one wants to play all t hatime the time it get hot here except in september and october when we have a spell |
