Show Panguitch High Girls Win State Track Championship By John Yardley You are sitting at home last Saturday evening watching the Celtics-Bucks replay. All is calm, relaxed and enjoyable because the Celts are winning again so whats new? The siren rings; lights flash. You can hear a P.A. system in the distance. What is it? Butch Cassidy revisited? The outlaws holed-up in the Blue Pine Hotel and the law is trying to talk them out? No, sorry-not this time. Down Suzette Simkins, Kim Swanger, Jodi Julander, Cauleen Goulding, Misty Miller, Colette Simpkins, Kena Mclnelly Suzane Heaton, Ronda LeFevre, Nanette Main Street in Panguitch comes the fire engine complete with escort, lights flashing, noise blaring in celebration. The Panguitch High Lady 'cats are returning from Provo where they captured their first-ever girls State Track Championship.-That's Championship.-That's right folks, we're talking history. The last time there was this much noise in Panguitch was March of '57 when Val Church brought home the boys with the State Basketball trophy. This time it is the girls' turn. Rookie coach Bart Reynolds is all 1 few U n ' slk-V , . " f-iil-' , -..,,.,. A r y .1 1 Vv(fV, "i f: - ?.-.... t ' l 1 .MU'M z -it A ! Title Nine has reached rural Utah. PHS has won a state title and proud of it. There's Misty Miller who, believe it or not, still has energy to walk. After all she has already, on this day, won more than most do in a career. First in the 800, first in the 1,600, first in the 3,200 and first on the medley relay team. Four firsts if you did'nt keep track. Leaping alongside is Kena "Long Jump" Mclnelly. She's won that event three straight times now. It's old hat to Kena. She was also a member of the winning medley team and placed third in the 200 meters. Next year they should just write her name in as the winner of (See TRACK Page 7) Track- G the log jump. No contest. She has simply become the Larry Bird of 1-A girls long jumping. She sets the standard. High on top sit Suzie Holman and Nanette Covington. Freshmen along for the ride, right? Wrong. Freshmen Fresh-men helping to drive the terrain. Suzie was second in the 400, is on the medley team. Nanette is body guard to Miller in the long runs finishing second in the 2-mile and third in the mile and hold off hard charging Monticello in the critical last relay of the day in which PHS had to outlast the Buckerooettes-or now, simply known as the Buckettes. Panguitch dropped them down the well with a long rope. Nobody remembers who was second these days. Now, where were we, oh yes, just passing by the up-town stores, we spy the twins Colette and Suzette Simkins, who gave it 100 percent every time out; Jodi Julander, that courageous senior who fought off tragic emotions to score in the shot-put shot-put when it would have been easier to fold; Cauleen Goulding, just a junior and steady competitor. Senior Kim Sanger who held back a Monticello competitor with a valiant effort, Suzanne Heaton a great 400 relay person, Ronda LeFevre who will win a state medal in more than one event before she's through; Terrie Baldwin is also a very fine athlete as a runner on relay. And so it goes as the fire engine passes on by. Well, there they go. State Champs for 1986. Panguitch girls, numero uno, and guess what else? Two seniors and the rest chomping at the bit for next year. Not to mention a host of eighth grade girls who want to be part of it all as well. It's history alright, but like they say, history often repeats itself. Panguitch could turn in a couple of more gold records. They have some golden gals who just may do it all again, but, for now, they are basking in the glory. Red and blue lights, loud speakers, adoring fans, it's great terrific. But please turn off that siren at least 'til next year. The Panguitch girls were not the only Garfield athletes who fared well at the State Track Meet in Provo last weekend. Vicki Crawford of Escalante High School won the discus throw and was second in the high jump. The stats for the meet follow: Misty Miller won the 3,200 M run with Nanette Covington following in second place. Kena Mclnelly swept the long jump event. Vicki Crawford of Escalante threw the plate for 103 feet five and one-half inches, as well as placing second in the high jump. Misty Miller claimed the 1500 M run and her teammate Nanette Covington claimed third. Second place in the 400 M run belongs to Suzie Holman. The 800 M run fell victim to the talents of Misty Miller. Kena Mclnelly claimed third place in the 200 M run. I I J - i ! r Darren Coughlin |
