Show Sanpete girls make trek By JANE ERICKSON July 6 1972 began what was to be an exciting and memorable memorable memorable able experience The Summit Summit- from Ephraim Moroni and Mt Pleasant had been plan planning ning this trip through the Zion Narrows for some time and it was with anticipation that we started the long drive to NavaJo Lake where we were to camp for the next two days Navajo was a beautiful setting for our group dinners and getting ac acquainted acquainted acquainted ac- ac the lake turned out tobe to tobe tobe be a lot of fun Friday morning found us on our way to the Narrow As we hiked Into the canyon we started discovering the fun and beauty of our surroundings The first step onto what we called jello mud was startling and fit the name perfectly The rock formations formations formations for for- and color variations were really fascinating and stimulated ones one's Imagination along all sorts of fanciful paths What was especially cool was that although the hiking got a little rougher as we went along the scenery and fun places got gotbetter gotbetter gotbetter better and better We were par particularly thrilled by the waterfalls waterfalls waterfalls water water- falls in their perfect picture settings of ferns moss and pools Mossy rocks and a current combined to make great slides even with an unexpected Wl- Wl un unexpected expected bump We gained a respect for the power even evena a shallow river has and learned learned learned learn learn- ed that a human chain was a stabilizing Influence w while h 11 e crossing slippery rapids and that sandbars are much easier to walk on than rocks One of the best parts of the hike was the satisfaction at the end of knowing you had J hiked ked 14 miles mUes along a river bed and really enjoyed It We were tired enough to feel we had really accomplished something great and even we we who slept on bare ground had a good rest that night Saturday morning we headed back for home stopping at Cedar Breaks and the Butch Cassidy home For me It was exciting and a great experience experience experience ence I will always remember I was Impressed by the spirit of the group the fun we had and the beauty of Gods God's handi handi- work This tour of the Narrows was part of the MIA fifth year Camp Program It was under the direction of Mrs Elaine Reid of the South Sanpete Stake Board Bishop Chris Parry Mt Pleasant acted as guide for forthe forthe forthe the group having taken 14 groups through the Zion Narrows There were girls participating ing from Moroni and Sanpete North Stakes In addition to the following from Ephraim Dr and Mrs Donald Dobson and their daughter Donna DOMa Lee Mr and Mrs Clair Erickson and their two daughters Jane and Ann Linda Nielson Jill Jut Howell Diane Squire and Mrs Darlene Anderson regional camp di di- di rector |
