Show SEARCHERS OF GENEALOGY the following matter was recently published in the NEWS but as there were then acme errors in it and it la Is of great hA importance it la is republished cor reeled by general request editor deseret news As A I 1 have been gathering genealogies and historical data of my ances alcee tore ton and in doing so have visited eng land wales and ireland and have been somewhat successful in getting considerable information and believing that it might be of interest to many of the numerous numer oui readers reader of the NEWS I 1 cheerfully submit the following statement at the general registration office at somerset house london I 1 learned that the dalfons daltons came over to england from normandy Norma ady and that sir walter dalton moved to ireland and settled lett led calling the place mont dalton this was in the twelfth century from tola this house sprang the dalfons daltons of ireland so I 1 went over to dublin got an interview with the assistant assia tant register general at the charlemont house rutland square by the name of robert E matheson Ma theon whom I 1 found to be a very gengul genchi gentleman I 1 learned from him the rules of the office relative to searching the records for surnames of friends A fee of 91 1 la Js exacted by the c office for six aix hours houra time or the fractional part thereof the six fix hours hour being considered a days work As I 1 expected to collect quite a number of names namee and knowing that I 1 would have to employ clerks to make extracts I 1 concluded to get as an many as could work judiciously at one time so 1 I con with five competent and experienced perien ced lady clerks agreeing to give them tour shillings and sixpence each per day to extract me one hundred and twenty five names each and it 11 they extracted more names than the i number agreed upon they should receive pay at the foregoing rati my clerks averaged me names each per day which gave me atan expense of fa 1 office fee and xa 1 as clerk hire making a total expense per day of 22 2 as an average cost of but ai U cents per name I 1 have a fixed under sta ding with the office to get all my work and any of my friends work done at the same figures from the best befit information I 1 can gain this is much cheaper than in the now new england states where the cost is about six cents per name all principal surnames are on record in the register generals office found in ireland I 1 procured a book treating of two tho irand principal surnames which are spelled in different ways in different districts in ireland this book proves tobe to be a good guide in hunting giver given names and locating them in their respective districts assisting the searching parties to open up a correspondence where it is in deemed necessary now if I 1 can be of any use in furnishing information to any friend on the foregoing subject I 1 shall take great pleasure in so doing without money consideration about the year 1837 a law war enacted by the british parliament compel palling ing parents to register births marriages and deaths in their families at the register is office of the district where they reside under pains and penalties for neglecting to do so thus a harvest of names are garnered in the different depositories repositories deposit ories of the nation the rule having been in full operation in ireland since 1864 1 I was also advised that there was at another iother office in dublin castle where when the pedigrees pedigreed grees of all persons owning estate in ireland with their coat of arms could be obtained 2000 being the fee exacted in my case there are register districts organized in the country all of which have to report to the register generals office where the facts are again re corded su so it will be seen been that a search in the principal office will save gave a per son on the trouble of traveller traveling over tile tha country I 1 am of the opinion that similar ar range ments could be made with the register generals office at somerset house london M W DALTON WILLAMY box elder co utah P S elders edward steventon of salt bait lake city and T W Brower brewerton tiou of this place have seen the forras forma of births marriages and deaths filled up un they are much pleated pleased with the order pursued and take much interest latt ireat thier there in M W D |
