ORDER OF THE DAY flag hoisted at sunrise amid platoons of musketry for want of cannon by order of warner at 10 am the millard county brigade enrolled and exercised till 12 dinner at one 2 pm before a general assembly of the citizens judge A call delivered the following ORATION FELLOW CITIZENS or OP MILLARD COUNTY it is with pleasure that I 1 meet you to participate in the celebration of our nations birthday birth day of independence we have all assembled here for one and the same object I 1 would ask what is that object we as a people have enjoyed for a few years the best government the best order laws and society of any people on earth therefore the object of our assembling sem bling here should be to grive give i thanks unto bim from whom alt all these blessings flow first of all we are indebted tootie to our heave heavenly father secondly honor is due to our forefathers the signers of the declaration of independence who run all risk of treason trusting in god to sustain them in their struggle for liberty we find ourselves this day far from that land far from where they risked their lives but we behold with the rising sun this morning the fla flag of our country and as long as we have blood in circulation let us honor bonor those stars and stripes we are located in the centre of this large territory we behold the first crops and the organization of our new country the citizens of this place have made great exertions in convertine convert converting this wild and uncivilized country into a fruitful field which does them great honor let us as citizens consider in wl whom join our strength lieth it is not in n our rat physical constitution ution nor in in our numbers but in that god who hath brought us hither it is in him our strength lieth and not in the strength of man yet we are to rever reverence those laws and constitution which have emanated from god I 1 through 9 b man unto us in this constitution there is virtue and power we are a M people gathered from every land and have brought WIT with us our different notions of things differing arm from every nation under heaven one obe thing we do rejoice I 1 in the alie submission of our people to those principles princia I 1 es laws ac that our fathers fought for this shows to us there is a god in israel behold the IT S officer when he calls his court adminis administering terin the th oath of allegiance to those who have gathered from other lands thereby showing to us t their h air willingness to abide by the he constitution of the V U S and support the principles of liberty we behold a splendid edifice now in in progress and the citizens of this territory engaged in this work which congress has furnished means to enable us to commence with fellow citizens when we draw a contrast between oil our r situation here and in the states we find we are differently situated we are not governed by men who have not the constitution at hearty heart but by bi men who respect love and chei cherish ish the principles contained in the constitution of the U S and we as a people will ever honor those men who may be placed at our head that will honor those laws that our ancestors bled for but those men who have driven us from our land acted upon a different principle they were men who if by driving us could secure to themselves a few votes it was all they cared for but these th things in 9 are well understood by you fellow citizens a and gd therefore as we have been delivered or in jtb other words have come out from among them we have reason to praise raise that bein being who 9 governs everns le the destinies of the guman human famil family when we trace the conduct or our worthy presidents washington ton jefferson and jackson we are confident had they they lived in the days of matty they would not have suffered such things to be heaped upon us but a little penurious tan buren would laugh at us and sa say cc your ur cause is is J but I 1 can do nothing for you rose those worthy presidents residents were men who sought to increase the wealth of the nation by agriculture culture e ac instead of seki seeking in f for or popularity by stooping g to party cliques and tg thereby reby neglecting the rights right of th the e citizens now we have another jefferson or jackson in the chair and not a matty mata everything has prospered in our hands for some tinie time our last president T taylor ay or began to raise his feathers a little how soon they were cropped our heavenly father laid his feathers and we prosper we attribute this to our heavenly father we have no power to choose a man for that station we have no voice in the matter but yet we have as much power as any state in the union where does it exist I 1 answer in faith and prayer which is more than their votes ten to one Ther therefore etore confide in him who rules over his people as he did israel in the days of moses and joshua millard fillmore in honor of whom this capitol is named let us bear him in mind before our heavenly father and show that we have a power the world is is not aware of inasmuch as we are a favored people lot let us remember these things when we 0 go o before god we have heard joseph alith smith say from from time to time that we should hold the constitution holy for it was waa our property properly and was dictated by god inasmuch fellow citizens as we are expecting a mighty 7 emigration 11 let us prepare for them by adding to our borders aud and secure alt all the grain gra in that is now ripening and say come and live under this banner let us be careful to place men to rule over us under this banner who have been mindful of us and our rights as citizens for we have felt the sting of others let us ever support men who have been willing to do good when we see a jackson come into the chair we see him b im choose a new cabinet men of clean hands but when we look at matty we see nothing but a demagogue lawyer hundreds of our brethren have been slam slain 11 in in consequence of such men and will we not be wise wise and guard against r such men hereafter we discover contention conten tiou all over the U S why is it because they have not men who trust in god but men who trust in their own wisdom now while we see this banner flying over our heads should we see anything arise to destroy our liberty let us nip it in the bud men have sought to destroy us in in our infant ir i territory and when they found they could not accomplish anything they have fled from our midst to a place where they could breathe their own atmosphere in conclusion I 1 would say let us observe the i instructions n given fiven us by our governor Gov emor and thank our heavenly father ather i that it hath pleased him to put it into the hearts of our rulers to give us the man of our choice to preside over us and consider it as a gift of god and fail not to call upon him to continue to work upon the fie hearts arts of our rulers until they shall appoint unto us such men as will execute the laws of this territory and the constitution of the united states in righteousness that the union may be preserved inviolate and forever I 1 add no more
