Show QUIET AT LEAD LEADVILLE VILLEN more conservative miners de bounce the violence home of tile the men killed were lead ins in alic 0 b e slave to tile the aclid alde desti nelion contemplated Lead leadville vilie colo sept 21 the work of dynamite and buckshot is in evidence at the city morgue where lie ile five bodies yesterday full ull of the vigorous life of the mount mountains alris one shot full of bullets while doing his duty two horribly mangled by the dynamite they were using to destroy destros life and property the others full of leaden leaden pellets received while they were fighting in the shadows to destroy the lives of men who were earning bread by honest toll toil an addition to the dath list was made at 9 this evening by the discovery of the body of michael daugherty on the ground near the emmet mine where he fell during the attack upon the emmet mine by the rioters flushed faushee with their victory at the coronado there were many peo people plein in upper windows and on house roofs provided with night glasses who in the brilliant moonlight saw the savage attack on the emmet and the more than gallant repulse of the rioters these thebe watchers say that the first volley from the mine was delivered at close range and that the attacking party fell like grain before the sickle how many met the fate of daugherty it may remain for time and a search of f long abandoned shafts in that vicinity to tell it now seems that the rioters dragged away their dead and wounded indian fashion for a great many people have been about the emmet today and this is the only dis covery of that kind the story of the defense of the em met is a thrilling one easily acce accessible sst and surrounded only by a light board fence it seems wonderful that it was not quickly overwhelmed its men slain and the buildings demolished but the fifteen buckshot found in baugher tys body and the story of the fearful effect of th the e first volley valley front from the mine tells how quickly the rioters lost stomach for the bloody business their work at the maid of erin was happily done for naught had this mine been blown up the great pumps which drain it and many other mines would have been destroyed and the ensuing damage frightful to contemplate this mornings work particularly w with ith the fire department has destroyed the last vestige of sympathy for or the strikers and this fact was evidenced at a largely attended meeting of representative citizens this afternoon their proceedings ce were secret but entirely harmonious mo and the measures decided upon it if stringent will be beneficial in the highest degree two companies of militia from pueblo and cripple creek all under command of colonel mccoy Coys arrived at this afternoon and are now on oil duty general brooks with several other companies are expected to arrive during the night the damage at the coronado by the burning of oil tanks boiler house and machinery is now stated to be on which there is 19 insurance the houses burned belonged to J call tames gregory burns and one empty ahouse house owner unknown they were valued at with no insurance despite the presence of troops ana the b unusual quietness of the ahe streets street there Is a very uneasy feeling prevalent among the more timorous class who assert that there are soo winchester Winch eiter rifles in the hands of the strikers whose repeated boasts as to the way they would do up the military are recalled with it fresh alarm the majority of our citizens however think that there will be no further trouble unless the managers begin importing miners the first attak attack was made upon the it coronado which Is in the city being d only half a dozen blocks from the post j 11 office and surrounded by residences full j 1 of people the coronado shaf Is fa J built on a large embankment of earth i s by logs and the machinery is 11 some fifty feet above the eI el i A heavy plank barricade was erected 1 aromnd the machinery and shaf thome i when the mine resumed operations list last month and the house was well stocked with provisions winchesters Win chesters and ammunition N beyond assaults on workmen A seen coming from the mine at divers a times no overt acts of violence had been attempted against this mine until this morning at I 1 when a few tew bullets bullett struck the barricade and the men on 9 guard prepared for action I 1 east of the engine house are several tanks of fuel oil these seemed to be the objective point the attack was wai concentrated on this point and finally a succeeded there was a bhelt of flame and a sputtering as though of bluing blazing powder the engine room was wa la in flames A few moments later and the clang of the fire engines was heard coming up ohp threet but it was not for them to save the coronado it wu was marked for eest destruction ruction and armed men held the firemen at ba bay y when the hole hoe cart reached the corner the hobe WAS being unreeled and the marshal and his men were getting ready for action when three men leaped from around the corner of the fence drop that hose was the command t as three rifles glittering in the glare ol of the flames were leveled on the men there was no other course but to drop the hose and the firemen fell back meanwhile the flames grew fiercer and fiercer the men in the shat shaf we were re finally driven from their fort hut but fought to the last As they ran over the high trestle work a dozen shots were 1 fired but they all reached the dump la in safety and made their escape by this time a great crowd had gathered hundreds ready to assist but held k at bay by the assassins and firebugs fire bugs who I 1 seemed concealed near the building but presently as the llie great sheet of flame rolled over the buildings it was apparent that unless there was timely action the buildings in the vicinity were doomed the firemen rallied for forby by this time hundreds hundred of citizens armed m rde with rifles appeared and gu guarded d tb 11 a fire department and volunteers all at t was devoted to the hoists in the vicinity but in spite of every effort at least four dwellings on ea eighth street were ere
