Show Page 4 December 8, 1965 The PARSON Grea test Sno w On Earth Beckons Parsons Skiers & Non-Skie- rs by Marilyn Pierson, Parson Feature Editor Let me tell you, if you're from California and havent ever skiied, or if you just havent ever had a chance to try skiing, now is your big opportunity. With the greatest snow on earth less than an hour away, you ought to be ashamed that you havent learned already. Anyway, you can rent everything youll need (skis, poles, boots) for something like five dollars. Depending on the resort, it will cost between $2.50 and $5 for a pass. Westminster has organized a ski club that has been doing exercises to get the 10-ri- de crew in shape and they would be more than happy to let you join. The snow is great. The powder is the softest youll ever learn on and for the first couple runs youll be glad its soft. The sun is shining and its warmer up there than it is here. Another thing: Dont let the Broken Bones Clubbers scare you. Youll notice the minute that cast, sling or whatever-it-- is is off, they are right back on the slopes. (This doesnt mean they are stupid, it simply means they love the sport.) There are some things that all of us need to remember about skiing though. These are called Doles Gospel: 1. Get in shape before the season starts. 2. Beginners: Take lessons or get help from someone who knows. 3. Dress properly. This means a good fit in clothes, warm gloves, thermal underwear, boots big enough to handle three or four pairs of stockings and still have room for your feet; goggles if its bright and a ski band to prevent frostbitten ears. 4. Never ski unless youve had a good nights sleep. 5. Stop when you get tired. 6. Ski courteously and defensively as if the other skiiers were mad. Youll meet some of the craziest and greatest people in the world on the slopes and theyre all willing to help the novice. (Maybe its for an ulterior motive, like fewer for them to run into after you learn, but nevertheless, theyre helpful.) Park City, Solitude, Brighton and Alta will all be open until late April, roads permitting. If you ski youre probably aware of how fantastic the resorts are, and if you dont ski, you should.
