In the past two years, Westminster had beaten Adams State by scores close to the one above. But Adams has been in a process of rebuilding and it appeared theyve done a pretty good job. Coach Lee is new here and has a new offense and he has to have time to also rebuild.. After all, Notre Dame had a bad year in 1956 and then came back strong. Personally, I think our team will too. The Parsons played a hard game against a good team. Coach State was one of the best small college squads he had ever seen. That the Parsons gave their all was evidenced by a few of the boys who limped around the campus last week. All this, and the loss of a couple of seasoned vets because of ineligibility didnt help. To sum it up, we have a good team with a lot of potential and the schedule ahead is a tough one. Any team that plays over half of its games on the road has a tough row to hoe. The team has its work cut out for the Homecoming game, and so do we. Lets go out and back the Parsons as we can and should. Unfortunately, through our great upsurge there was a great decline in American music. There was no singing, just gutteral sounds, dancing was gone, wild stamping taking its place. This period, I shall call The Dark Ages of American Music. And gathering dust was the only true American art form, jazz. Its few waning disciples were inundated by mad gyrations. Fortunately, jazz appeals to the creative mind and stirs the inner soul. Thus, modern jazz is experiencing a rebirth. Jazz is to be listened to, not just heard. It is the kind of music that is a challenge to the intellectual and. stirs the imagination. Jazz musicians play what they feel; it is their music, they mold and sculpture it to their own personal liking. What is jazz? Jazz is the music the Americans can say is theirs. Ii originated in America, and has developed from its shabby beginning to an art of high degree. Jazz masters are skilled musicians. The music they play is comparable to the classics, for both take skill and practice to be of worth. Artists, such as Dave Brubeck, studied piano under the direction of Darius Meho, GiGi Gryce is a graduate of the Paris Conservatory of Music. Both are outstanding jazz musicians. And then there was the late George Gershwin, and his Rhapsody in Blue, a jazz classic that will remain immortal. "Rock is dominated by the fifteen-year-ol- d to class, and eight for a person of the college age to listen to such music would be insulting his intelligence. Music with no symmetry and no lyrics, music that any village idiot could understand, is the music of rock n roll. Jazz has come into its own as a high art. Jazz is an American art, for American people. But height and weight reject a lot of athletes and consequently it is not their fault. There is a sport that does not set a minimum height and weight standard, however Boxing. So what happened to boxing? A famous sports magazines quotes a college coach as saying, You can blame it on the moms. A dozen years ago, college boxing, which is a beautiful sport to watch, seemed well on its way to becoming one of the most popular intercollegiate sports. The sports decline since then has been sharp. Intercollegiate boxing started in 1919 with a match between Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania, and spread rapidly enough to warrant national tournaments. The college boxing boom came in 1938. In 1948 intercollegiate boxg ing had grown to 55 colleges with each other and others suDDorted it intramurally. But by 1952, the records show there were only 29 intercollegiate teams, and the number has even decreased since then. For those who are not acquainted with college boxing but have seen he prize fights on television, please dont associate them. The only that can be made is that the prize fighter and the college boxer both wear gloves and trunks. Most people, mainly parents, think that the only possible result from a boxing match is that one of the contestants receives a bloody beating. The truth is that their boy stands little risk of being hurt. The glove used ia college bouts today consists of foam rubber and weighs 12 ounces. Also, there has been the adoption . of protective headguards that have proved to be real shock absorbers. Recently, a study was made by a number of physicians of the effects of boxing upon students. The statements by most were that boxing in college resulted in no damage to the participants and produced a well coordinated stunhysically-fit- , For Quick And Courteous Service Bring Your Car To ie 6, Adams State piled up 18 first downs and 397 yards rushing against the Parsons five first downs and 52 yards from rushing.
