The trouble with this attitude is that the person who doesnt understand contemporary music feels inferior and people dont listen to the radio to be looked-dowupon. Contemporary music should raise the standards of popular music as it progresses, but it never will when presented in this manner. Id play Little Richard or Elvis Presley or anything else all day long before Id ridicule a persons taste in music. Our professors can only present us the materials and indicate how to use them, but WE are the ones who must accept these materials and use them after our college careeers are over and we take our places in society, whatever they may be. The Jruth is that you will find a purpose for each. One tends to raise the standards of the other usually. However I think that in todays radio you will find that d, work, and more emphasis on extracurricular activities. Students are freer to choose the courses they want to take. The cumulative effect is to cut the time spent on basic subjects and of course the amount of basic knowledge gained by the students. A clear illustration of this is found by merely looking through the current catalogues of colleges and universities and glancing at the number and variety of remedial courses offered high school graduates to enable them to embark upon college work. Another factor enters into the problem of lack of knowledge, this one more directly related to the student at Westminster College. This is the problem of attitude. Too many students, both on the high school and college level, do only enough to get by. In high school, such students take the required courses and do a minimum amount of work. For their electives they select the easiest classes they can find. In college they use the same tactics. Their only goal is to obtain a degree. For them it does not matter whether or not this degree represents any knowledge as lohg as they have the sheepskin they are content. tjeev think up excuses as to why you shouldnt lend your overworked hand to this simple task, let the famous cry of the campus, I DONT HAVE THE TIME stay in the gutter where it belongs. If something is worth while then you can make time for it without pain. Studying is important and something we should all do a lot more of, but being a responsible citizen is more important and being a college student doesnt ex: cuse you from responsibility. Westminster College has not been imposed upon too often to give help to the less fortunate in the community, but now that the ball has been tossed our way, lets grab it and go all the way.
