Fresh air, smell of new books and rain... all some of my favorite things. However, these relaxing smells are a rare occurrence on campus these days. What does fall, and every other season, consist of at Westminster? Smoke. No, I am not talking about the suffocating smog we experience in the winter, which is like sitting in the middle PRODUCTION MANAGER JACKSON LINK ASSISTANT EDITORS EMILY SENDOSKY ADVISER KIMZARKIN STAFF REPORTERS of a smoking fireplace. According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemical compounds. More than 250 of these are known to be harmful and at least 69 are known to cause cancer. Each year, secondhand smoke is responsible for an estimated 46,000 deaths from heart disease and 3,400 from lung cancer. Smoking near buildings, and in high-traff- ic areas, exposes other people to all of these harmful chemicals. Therefore, not only is it breaking the law to stand close to doorways, it is inconsiderate and harmful to your peers. I regularly see people smoking near buildings on this campus. I dont know what it is: do college kids still believe it makes them look super cool when they have a cigarette in their hands? If so, more power to you, but look cool 25 feet away from all buildings. Lets take that a step further and say dont smoke around groups of people. Think about it this way: If I walked up into the middle of your study group and started singing Its a Small World over and over as loudly as I possibly could, would you be annoyed? Because that is pretty close to how annoyed I feel every time I have to walk through a giant cloud of smoke just to get to my class. One argument I have heard some students make for standing near entrances is that the ashtrays are located there. According to Utahs Clean Air Act, ashtrays can be placed near entrances, but it has to be posted that it is provided for convenience only and the area around it is not a smoking area. .1 find it contradictory that on a campus asking people to not smoke within 25 feet of doors, all ashtrays are located within this area. If it is a Utah law not to smoke there, the accommodations for smokers should be located outside of the 25 feet as well. Westminster does meet the requirements set by the law, however, so standing near ashtrays is not a good reason to stand near the entrances. Here is my last pet peeve for now: students smoking right before class, sitting down next to me and making me smell that the entire class period. This interferes with students experience in the classroom. When this happens, I cant breathe and I spend the class being annoyed and thinking about how bad it smells rather than listening to the professor. After reading student opinions on the board in Shaw addressing the idea of a smoke-fre- e campus, most students seem to prefer designated smoking areas. This seems to be a fair solution. Designated smoking areas would allow students to avoid inhaling smoke, would decrease the amount of secondhand smoke on our campus and would not intrude on the rights of smokers. It all comes down to common courtesy. I know smoking in general is not against the law and everyone has the right to smoke if that is what they want to do. However, try to be courteous to fellow classmates, faculty and staff next time you light up. CONTACT 1840 S. 1300 E.
