Show ) Discovering the histories of Spain first-han- d These Westminster students traveled to Europe to see cathedrals, monuments and countryside The pilgrimage road to Saint James, which let us walk across northern Spain this May prepared us for the most marvelous experience of arriving at Santiago de Compostela, Spain. We were able to contemplate beautiful valleys, hills, monasteries, Romans highways, Roman bridges, hermitages, cathedrals, castles and villages seasoned by time and history, but the most profound influence was the opportunity to understand the importance and the appreciation of friendship, the reward and gift of the efforts we all made. One alone cant explain that which belongs to all; it is the reason why I transcribe some memories from our pilgrims (my colleague and some of our students). H ) i Assistant Professor Deyanira Ariza Our pilgrimage on the Camino to Santiago was a tremendous learning experience. We walked through centuries of Catholic, Moorish, Basque, Castilian and Galician history as part of a rolling community of pilgrims from all corners of the world. Along the way, we also learned plenty about hard work, cooperation and I hope to keep in touch with. I would like to become more involved on campus. I think it was very positive experience to go another country and see what things are like there. Being in Spain made me realize I would like to study abroad and travel so much. I am so thankful for this journey and will never forget it. And things seem to be better at home as well it is good to get away and ever better to get back. the wall beside the line, holding out a cup with a couple coins inside. I had seen plenty of gypsies outside this cathedral and many other cathedrals, but never inside. When we finally made it up to Jimmys statue, I gave him a big hug and whispered Thanks, big guy. Paz. Benjamin V. Rackham Candice White I returned to the cathedral later in the day to take some photos and bumped into Jeff. We strolled through the place at a comfortable pace, taking time to learn apart what we saw with the help of his guidebook. We went ahead out the reliquary a statue of Saint James the apostle again and hung around for a while, since there was no line whatsoever. The line for the embrace was very long on the other hand, but eventually we decided it was worth the wait. A gypsy sat hunched along caring for one another. And our little group of students, two faculty and a guide formed a unique identity through our shared experiences that none of us will ever forget. Associate Professor JeffNichols V r. Its hard to pick out any one thing about our trip. I still smile when I think about the foggy, rainy morning after O Cebreiro. We stopped at the Casa Nunez, after El Alto del Poio, and two women were playing music. The next thing I knew, our professor Deyanira was dancing and singing with them. I didnt know if I was going to have to leave them there or if the women were going to come with us. My favorite morning was walking to Fromista. I got an early start. It was light, but the sun hadnt come up yet. The mist was just rising from the fields as I walked along an old canal. The frogs were croaking, the birds were singing. It was magic. I was thinking about the number of people that must have walked this same route over the hundreds of years, when out of the mist, going the opposite direction, went an old hermit that looked just like the pictures of Santiago. I miss Spain. jk r 14 "i rr. Robert Brikman '1 e. I think about day one and now and how much has changed. I am so thankful for my experiences of this it is going to be hard to beat this May Term. trip This trip made me realize so many things it made me motived to accomplish so many things and get an idea of what I want to do in the next few years. It reminded me that I need to care for my family, but not let it distract me from my goals in life. I would like to take more Spanish, volunteer a lot more ... because that is what makes me happy.
