Show 6 THE FORUM March 31, 2004 2004 Elections Class Open For Fall life After Westminster: Kim Brokling Tools to Be Successful Contributing Writer Next fall, Westminster College will be offering a presidential elections class called 2004 Presidential Election: Strategy and Substance. The class will track the . presidential campaign and explore relative issues such as health care, war, manipulation of the media and campaign , strategy. The daily newspaper will be the required textbook. The class will be team taught by Boh Seltzer and Roger Livingston. Seltzer is a Democrat who has been legislative director or chief of staff for four United States senators. He currently works for the college as President Michael Bassis assistant. Livingston is a Republican. He runs Utah Sen. Orrin Hatchs office. Were trying to balance it ideologically, said Seltzer with a laugh as he, explained the differing views between himself and Livingston. Its not pure propaganda. The class will probably also have guest lecturers from different programs to explore the effects of presidential elections on certain issues. For example, somebody in the nursing department may speak about healthcare issues. Were all going to suffer through this campaign, said Seltzer, pointing out that the campaign and the mudslinging and candidate interviews are going to start dominating the media next fall as it gets closer to election time. If were going to be subjected to it, we might as well understand it. This is important, this is not just two guys playing a game. Part of the point of the class is to restore the belief that politicians are doing the best job they can to run the country. Our politics are so debased that people think candidates are trying to ruin the country, said Seltzer. Theyre trying their best. They can be wrong, but you dont have to conclude that theyre doing that to destroy America. The class will be informal and encourage a lot of discussion. The honors program offers the course, but the class is open to all students who are interested in taking it. Only one section of the class will be taught since the class is correlated with the 2(X)4. election. For more information on the 20 Presidential Election class contact Seltzer at J 832-255- 2.
